Non-surgical periodontal therapy is the key to controlling and maintaining achieving periodontal disease avoid surgical phase in many patients with periodontal disease. Male patient 46 years of age diagnosed with generalized aggressive periodontitis mechanical dental plaque control, motivation and oral hygiene instruction, periodontal debridement quadrant, 0.12% chlorhexidine mouthwash 15 ml 30s performed by two times a day for seven days; It was supplemented with systemic antibiotic therapy Clindamycin 300mg three times daily for seven days. During a year of monitoring and treatment of periodontal maintenance reduced clinical parameters such as bleeding on probing, reduced attachment loss and stability of bone level was observed.

Ebola is an infectious disease highly lethal caused by one of the Ebola virus strains, this year on August 8th, the World Health Organization declared the Ebola outbreak a ‘public health emergency of international concern’ because the outbreak of Zaire strain who affected several countries in western Africa -Guinea Conakry, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria – and have already infected more than 20000 people and killed at least 8000. This paper reflects on the epidemic current context, their specific consequences over the health staff and the relationship between the determinants of health of such communities

The objective of this work, is provide conceptual elements that constitute an integrated vision of care conditions required by the human talent in health HTH) that caters to people with chronic disease (CD) and their families, and that are translated into a tool for gathering information of survey type that allow characterization. This research was conducted in three phases: 1) Review of the literature. 2) Structuring a proposed survey 3) Refinement of the final version of the survey. As results, based on the conceptual framework it was possible to reach a comprehensive vision that served as the basis for the development of a survey to identify the conditions of HTH to care for people with chronic illness and their families. This instrument, called GCPC-A-THS (in Spanish), contains 37 items distributed in 6 additional dimensions that include aspects of care such as: sociodemographic variables of HTH, caring ability, information and communication technologies (ICTs) as a means of support to care, continuity, security and also includes some items related to the level of professional satisfaction. The work done made it possible to achieve a comprehensive view of the characteristics and conditions required by the HTH for care to people with chronic illness and their families

Odontogenic tumors are a group of lesions originated from odontogenesis course alterations. Within odontogenic tumors is ameloblastoma, its treatment probably is one of the most controversial, because its aggressive behavior, high recurrence and probably low malignancies. Radiographs play an important role in assessment from this tumor, but the limitation is they are in two dimensions exams. Cone beam computed tomography is a valuable tool because enable a comprehensive assessment of anatomical structures by multiple sections of the area. Therefore, evaluation of ameloblastoma is complete by cone beam computed tomography because bone structures do not show distortion neither magnification.

To determine the frequency of carrying pharyngeal of Streptococcus pyogenes and their sensitivity profiles in schoolchildren from Cartagena. Analytical cross-sectional study, the sample was composed by 131 children. Strains of Streptococcus pyogenes were identified using conventional methods. Antibiotic sensitivity was determined the Kirby-Bauer methods. A questionnaire was applied in order to identify risk factors associated.19,8% of children were carriers of bacterium. 26 isolates of Streptococcus pyogenes were obtained. To evaluate the sensitivity were found strains sensible to ceftriaxone and erytrhomycin (84,6% each one). 23,1% (6/26) 0f isolates were resistant to ampicillin. It not was found association between carrying pharyngeal of Streptococcuspyogenes and risk factors (p>0,05). It were found resistant strains to antibiotics considered of first election for therapy of infectious diseases produced by this bacterium

The knowledge of sexual practices in young adults is required to run preventive actions aimed at the reduction of transmitted sexual diseases and unwanted pregnancies. To determine the prevalence Sildenafil Citrate consumption and its associated factors in College Students, during the first half-year of 2013. A crosssectional, descriptive study was conducted between April and June of 2013, the sample size was 340, and all of them are male college students, aged 18 to 26 years; all information were collected using a structured survey. The prevalence of Viagra or Sildenafil Citrate was 7,56% (CI95% 4,6%-10,6%); the main predisposing factors for its use is to suffer of Male Erectile Dysfunction (OR 14.72, CI95% 5.29 to 40.96), when it was adjusted by a multivariate model this association increases about 50% (OR 21.67, CI95% 6.27 to 74.89) and curiosity about this drug (OR 4 21 CI95% 1.63 to 11.3) is the second one. Although Sildenafil Citrate consumption has low prevalence; it is mainly related with men who have suffered erectile dysfunction and curiosity to experience its effects.

There is little evidence about linguistic expressions used that show internalized homophobia by homosexual individuals. The objective of this research was to explore suggestive internalized homophobic language used by web page users for homosocialization purposes among homosexual men living in Bogotá and Cartagena, Colombia. A qualitative study was designed with the purpose of analyzing content of 40 profiles, 20 from Bogota, and in the same proportion in Cartagena. This was based on account profiles from a website which contained contact inquiries between people who were not heterosexual and described homophobic characteristics when referring to their ideal partner. It was observed that in 19 out of 20 profiles in Bogotá and the same proportion in Cartagena people used suggestive and direct qualifiers that showed internalized explicit homophobia and implicit language, for instance, “I am looking for serious people”. The internalized homophobia is expressed by looking for that “macho” man who is professional and lives a heterosexual lifestyle. Authors conclude that homosexual men who requested contact with other men by Internet often expressed internalized homophobia in explicit and implicit ways, which suggests accepting hegemonic model of masculine men. Quantitative studies are needed in Colombian non-heterosexual populations.

Methods for preoperative localization of parathyroidin secondary hyperparathyroidism are controversial in the literature and have different and dissimilar sensitivity. With the objective to determine the correlation between preoperative ultrasound, scintigraphy MIBI and intraoperative findings in secondary hyperparathyroidism we review our 10 years statistic.Between2004-2014, 100 patients underwent parathyroidectomy due to secondary hyperparathyroidism. Data obtained from medical records included: preoperative serum parathormona, ultrasound, scintigraphy. Positive predictive value and negative predictive value were analyzed in correlation with intraoperative findings.The method of calculation of ROC curves and area under the curve and other screening values (confidence index, index of validity and likelihood ratio) were used. 68% were women; mean age was 52,7 years. Mean PTH value was 1486 pg/ml. The specificity and sensitivity of preoperative ultrasound were 94,44% and 30,14%, respectively. PPV was 93,62% and NPV was 33,33%. For scintigraphy, the sensitivity was 25,34%, specificity 98,15%, PPV was 97,37% and NPV was 32,72%. The ultrasound diagnosed 94 glands among a possibility of 400, the scintigraphy showed 76 and the surgery founded 292. Recurrence, 22%. Ultrasound and scintigraphy allow the localization of pathological parathyroid; however, in 10% of cases,glands could not be detected preoperatively, making surgeons experience fundamental in gland localization.

A review was conducted in databases (PubMed, PEDro) of type studies clinical trial, cohort study, systematic reviews, meta-analysis and clinical practice guidelines based on evidence they have studied the benefits of physical activity in the prevention , treatment and decreased risk of complications and death in patients with Type II Diabetes Mellitus. Realization regular physical activity is associated with a decreased risk of developing Diabetes Mellitus; likewise was associated with decrease in glycated hemoglobin percentage A1C values. Diabetic patients undergoing high levels of physical activity had decreased risk of complications and death from cardiovascular disease and all causes. At present the scientific evidence on the impact of physical activity in the prevention and treatment of Diabetes Mellitus is solid, so it must be emphasized promoting physical activity as a fundamental part of the therapeutic regimens for this disease

The purpose of this research was to formulate and implement playful strategies to increase the level of knowledge in a group of students about gingivitis associated with bacterial plaque and its prevention, this project was developed in Pereira city at Alfonso Jaramillo Gutiérrez high school. The studio started from assuming that traditional teaching methodologies have proved to be highly ineffective and considering that playful strategies strengthen the active participation of the subject community of intervention. A qualitative approach was adopted, this methodology is characterized by its dialogic nature where beliefs, myths, prejudices and feelings are accepted as elements of analysis to produce knowledge. The research method chosen was the Action Research and teaching workshops and focus groups were used as investigation techniques. It was proved that the initial level of knowledge of these teenagers was low. Most of them were totally unfamiliar with the gingivitis associated with dental plaque and through the playful strategies they increased their knowledge, obtained meaningful learning and achieved an active participation.

A case report of a newborn patient with a DC located in right orbit, whit research of the medical literature review of the presentation of DC. Descriptive and case report. Methodology: the presentation of the case patient and a review of the literature of the affected population and intervened, and the approach to the pathological component of the disease.The majority of dermoid cysts seen in ophthalmic practice is superficial and present in early childhood as discrete swellings in the brow or eyelid. In de Dermoids there are a good prognostic and is better is treatment early.

Obesity is an epidemic problem in the world and is present from an early age. The objective was to analyze the variability of excess weight, glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL and HDL in obese students. 276 school children, 9 to 16 years of municipal educational units of the Metropolitan District of Quito, cohort 2010-2011, whom blood measurement was performed after fasting for eight hours. The risk categorization was based on the American Diabetes Association and the National Cholesterol Education Program. Excess weight was calculated in kilograms, from the WHO reference for age and sex. The average adolescents showed greater excess weight unlike early adolescents and children (p <0.001). Glucose risk in 1.4%, triglycerides 24.7%, total cholesterol 8.4%, HDL and LDL 31.6% and 6.2% respectively was found. Significant positive correlation was found with triglycerides increased LDL (r = 14) and total cholesterol (r = 0.27), and decreased HDL (r=-0.29) fraction. Changes in biomarkers described should facilitate the strengthening of public policies for obesity prevention.

Atherosclerosis and its complications are a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. However, only half of the cases are justified by traditional risk factors. Nevertheless for almost five decades ago, has tried to find non-traditional causes associated with atherosclerotic disease. Various infectious agents have emerged as potential candidates being centralized research Chlamydophila pneumoniae by its ability to infect endothelial cells in the atherosclerotic process. Over time many studies have tried to prove the causality of C. pneumoniae in the atherosclerotic process and its complications. Despite this, to date the findings are ambiguous and of little relevance to daily clinical practice.

Work as vital for the development of people requires adequate health conditions element, but there are factors that can affect the employee or the company. In the present study seeks to determine the psychosocial factors which are exposed to the nursing staff from the emergency department of a university hospital. A descriptive study was conducted to 16 nurses and 64 nursing assistants working in different days in the emergency department of a university hospital in Cartagena. Two instruments, the sociodemographic profile and diagnosis of measured psychosocial factors related to task content, relationships, time management and personnel management were used. Study participants are mostly women, mean age 34 years and socioeconomic 2 and 3; about psychosocial risks are mostly affected the dimensions of personnel management in 98.8% and organization of work 93.8%, the content of the task by 75% and human relations in 53.8%. The results of the study reported risk factors in the dimensions of personnel management and organization of working time.

Child abuse remains a situation experienced by children of all social classes, while this usually occurs with higher incidence in children living under poor socioeconomic status, which may affect the quality of life for these children to be victims of experienced abuse in their family and social environment. This study aims to describe the forms of child abuse used by adults the barrio Las Malvinas in under 18 years, the methodology used was descriptive and quantitative crosscut. The sample consisted of 83 adults living in the neighborhood of Las Malvinas, which is a survey called Survey for the Detection of Child Abuse or at risk for, resulting in the highest incidence psychological abuse, acts of abuse in children were prompted by a family member and in triggering situations described by adults surveyed is overwork and lack of money.

From social representations (RS) establishes the concepts that determine the attitudes, social support and interests of individuals. This is a qualitative, descriptive and cross-sectional design, which aimed to identify the RS memory in college students. The sample consisted of 60 subjects anthropology students and systems engineering, aged 16-30 years (Mean = 21.35 Std. Tip = 3.3) who were assessed through a semistructured interview, in which were asked about the definition of memory and semantic universe of the construct using the technique of free association. The information was handled by theories of discourse analysis and content, the results showed four categories related to memory: neuropsychological, cultural, and technological experiential were subsequently contrasted with existing scientific theories.

Vasectomy is a complex process that affects the sexual life of men, this practice there are a number of myths regarding the loss of virility or sexual force those men who dare to be performed this surgery. Objectives: To determine perception of men to the practice of vasectomy in 3 districts of Cartagena in 2013. Methodology:Descriptive, discriminated, the initial phase were identified sociodemographic characteristics and knowledge level of the 162 participants, divided 54 participants in each neighborhood; second phase where we used a sample of 30 participants discriminated by 10 for each neighborhood, using an instrument of 22 closed and open questions describing the myths and beliefs before the vasectomy. Results: Vasectomy is more accepted among men aged 25-35 years showing greater interest when participating in birth control, however a small percentage of men aged 20-25 would be willing to be held the procedure. Conclusions: There are few men who have myths and beliefs about the surgical procedure male family planning vasectomy

To characterize neonatal congenital abnormalities presented in a health institution Santa Marta Colombia from 2007 to 2011. Descriptive, retrospective, quantitative study. Data collection was done through review of medical records, according to the variables requested in a format designed and validated by expert judgment. Characteristics of the infant, birth, congenital anomaly present, paternal and maternal history and antenatal variables and reporting on public health were studied. The study was conducted with a purposive sample of 55 cases of infants who met the selection criteria. They were identified as congenital defects of the cardiovascular system (54.54%), central nervous system (18.18%). No respiratory or genitourinary malformations were recorded. Females (85%), the majority of normal weight and born at term. No notification to public health was evident; Four infants had multiple malformations associations. Frequent neonatal congenital abnormalities affecting the cardiovascular and neurological systems, no abnormalities of the urinary and respiratory systems were evident. 7 died shortly after birth.

The link between Western health vision and indigenous medicine builds collective identity in health education. Objective: To analyze the perception of participation in a training program in health, from the perspective of midwives and traditional healers in northern Ecuadorian Andes. Qualitative interpretive explanatory design, 25 in-depth interviews and three focus groups were conducted with 20 midwives and 5 traditional healers between 23-65 years old, self-identified as indigenous communities living in the northern Ecuadorian Andes; sampling was intentional and reasoned, to opinion-based. The subcategories were: definition of participation in a training program in health, social roles and health training and application training. The contrast of the narrative was analyzed with sex and type of informant. Participation in a health education program was described as an opportunity to share, retrieve, preserve and strengthen traditional medicine; comment on issues of health and disease in public settings such as assemblies and in private settings as the act of curing people. The construction of participation in a training program in health, from traditional medicine actors enriches the process.

The lifestyle can be defined as a way of life, where living conditions and patterns of individual behavior, in turn determined by sociocultural factors surrounding and personal characteristics, which determines their relationship to interact environment, relationships and health. This study aimed to describe the lifestyle of young students in vulnerable population, Grade 9 ° and 10 ° of a public institution of secondary education in the Comuna 1, the District of Santa Marta. The methodology used was descriptive quantitative, with cross design. The sample consisted of 93 students between 13-18 years of age, which was applied to the questionnaire FANTASTIC lifestyles saludables, validated in Colombia. As a result it was found that 60% of teenagers have lifestyles within the “danger zone” (presence of unhealthy risk behaviors), and the other 40% was located in the “somewhat low” level in healthy behaviors.

There is a high prevalence of bad quality of sleep in university students, especially medicine. Sleep disturbance adversely affect the mental, physical health and quality of life. To evaluate the quality of sleep and insomnia and his association with the academic yield in medicine students of a public university from Colombian Caribbean Coast. Cross sectional study, carried out on sample of first to tenth-semester of medical students from Universidad de Cartagena, Colombia who agreed to participate in the investigation by signing an informed consent form. The Athens scale, the Epworth sleepiness scale and the Pittsburgh sleep quality index was applied with a survey compilation of socio-demographic and academic data. A global sum of five or greater in Athens scale indicates insomnia and a global sum of five or greater in Pittsburgh indicates a poor sleeper. A stratified sample by gender and semester was chosen. Data analysis was performed using Epi-Info statical program (version 7). A p value <0.05 was considered as statically significant. 210 medical students filled completely the surveys. Students had a average age 19.7 ± 2.0 SD. Males: 49%, students from Cartagena city: 69%. Academic average 3.8±0.28 SD. Students with a high academic performance: 31.4%. 88.1% were poor sleepers. It was not found statically significant difference between good sleeper, poor sleeper and academic yield. 46.6% of students had insomnia. Students with academic high performance had significantly lower presence of insomnia. Students with insomnia and poor sleeper were more significant presence of daytime sleepiness. Medical students of one Colombia University had higher prevalence of poor sleeper, but it was not associated with academic yield. Insomnia also was prevalent and had significant association with academic performance.
