This work is devoted to analyze "Pictures of the last of the Quiet Don" by P.N. Krasnov (1909). In this book, the author creates an ideal image of the Cossack as a "valiant cavalry warrior". Krasnov argues that Cossacks should adhere to the "great covenants" and "fine examples" of their ancestors to solve all problems. These covenants are reduced to two principles: the principle of unconditional submission to the authorities and principle of priority of military service. P.N. Krasnov believed that the Cossacks, which did not comply with these two principles, had no right to be considered true Cossacks. This ideology was primitive, but it corresponded to the government policy of 1900, and therefore the book of P.N. Krasnov was released under the auspices of the Don Ataman A.V. Samsonov.

The problem of the Genesis and subsequent development of Islam in a particular ethnically complex region, which is the North Caucasus, still remains unexplored. In Russian historical science in the Caucasus are wonderfully tenacious and almost not remeasured standards developed in the Soviet era, according to which Islam penetrates to the Caucasus very late (almost in the century XVIII), and this procedure is a rather negative for the people's culture, rather than a positive direction. Therefore, the author departs from the existing dies and considers the problem from the standpoint of objectivity, consistency and historicism. The chronological scope of the article is conventional and is motivated by the fact that the initial penetration of Islam in the North Caucasus dates back to the VII century, when the Arabs invaded Dagestan, the upper limit of work consists of century XIX, when fully completed, the adoption of this religion mountain peoples and Islam in its various sects firmly established in the North Caucasus. The author comes to the conclusion that the process of Islamisation of the mountain peoples of the North Caucasus region was due to the prevailing political situation in the region and outside it; the Islamic faith in the North Caucasus had never had their own roots, and was brought in from outside, alien conquerors; the degree of illisionist the mountain peoples was different: in the Eastern parts of the Caucasus (Chechnya, Ingushetia, Dagestan) Islam deeply penetrated into the consciousness of the people, in their behavioral norms than in Western (Kabarda, Cherkessia, Adygea).

The article discusses the military art of the command structure of the Imperial Russian army during the Caucasian war in the Black sea coastline. The article is paid attention to the amphibious operations at the mouth of the Psezuapse river, held in 1839-1840. The materials for the preparation are the archival documents of achival department of Sochi administration. The methodological basis of the research are the principles of objectivity and historicism, suggesting an unbiased approach to the analysis of the studied problems, a critical attitude to the sources, making judgements as a result of the analysis of a set of facts, as well as the display of phenomena in the development and the context of the historical situation. The author comes to the conclusion that during the landing operations at the mouth of the Psezuapse river has been widely applied to military art: a misleading the enemy about the place of landing, the use of boats in the mouth of the river, etc., which helped to keep the personnel of the Russian army. These operations have become the most bloodless during the confrontation on the black sea coastline.

In the current article have been analyzed the missionary and constructive activities of the Ossetian Theological Committee in respect of the religious and moral enlightenment of the Central Caucasian nations. There have been outlined the political, economic and ecclesiastical premises referring to the role of the Orthodox Christianity in establishing and developing of the pedagogical school of the nations settled in the Central Caucasus. In conclusion, the author notes that, beginning from 1740-ies, there is significantly activated the socio-economic and political influence of Russia in the North Caucasus. Kabarda, Ossetia, Ingushetia and Chechnya are voluntarily joined the Russian Empire. This had the great historical significance and played an objectively progressive role in the life of the highlanders. To this period belongs the formation of the school and the policy of Russia in the region. It is connected with the activities of Orthodox missionaries of the Georgian and Ossetian origin, being at the service of the Russian government.

On the basis of underutilized documentary material in the article analyses the role of material culture of the highlanders wartime (XIII - XVIII centuries), includes weapons and defensive structures. It says that all Caucasian people have thought through a clear system of defense against not only external enemies, but also his countrymen, encouraged by the raids of the feudal elite, need, and personal prowess. So there in the Caucasus almost none of the village, above the buildings which did not dominate combat or residential towers, and on the adjacent territory had defensive walls and customs gate, the cave (rock) fortifications and fortresses, castle complexes of the type. It is proved that the fortification culture of the Caucasian peoples had their characteristic genetic link with empirical housing and therefore was an all positive achievements of ethnic architecture.
