Genetic parameters and association studies for important quantitative traits in advanced lines of Sambamahsuri derivatives

Thirty three lines of F5 progenies obtained from Sabita/Sambamahsuri derivatives were evaluated along with parents and
three check varieties for 19 characters. Significant differences were observed for all the characters studied. Three lines
possessed significantly higher grain yield than superior check variety. High estimates of PCV and GCV were recorded for
grain yield per plant, panicle weight, number of panicles per plant, number of secondary branches per panicle, number of
grains per panicle, 1000 grain weight and florets number per panicle. High heritability was observed for most of the
characters viz. plant height, grain length, grain breadth, grain L/B ratio, kernel length, kernel breadth, days to 50 %
flowering, fertility %, days to maturity, 1000 grain weight and kernel L/B ratio. High genetic advance was observed for
florets number per panicle, plant height and number of grains per panicle. Genetic advance as percentage of mean was
highest for grain yield per plant where as lowest was for days to maturity. High heritability coupled with high GA was
recorded for plant height, days to 50% flowering, fertility %, days to maturity and 1000 grain weight. High heritability with
low genetic advance was observed for grain length, grain breadth, grain L/B ratio, kernel length, kernel breadth and kernel
L/B ratio. Grain yield per plant was significantly correlated with number of panicle per plant, panicle weight, number of
secondary branches per panicle. Kernel length imparted the highest positive direct effect on grain yield followed by grain
L/B ratio, grain breadth and fertility %.
