A CORPUS-BASED VOCABULARY EVALUATION IN NIHAL ATSIZ’S “TURKISH IDEALISM” BOOK

Hüseyin Nihal Atsız, who left a strong mark on an era, had still valid treatise and ideas, shed light on
language, history and literature fields from past to day, is an influential ideologist. The life centre of highly
influential Nihal Atsiz's philosophy and area of interest cover everything related to "Turks". This study is
based on Nihal Atsiz’s second edition “Turkish Idealism" book published in 1 January, 1966. The content of
his book consists of 21 intellectual articles with different topics, published in various journals and dates.
This historical and author’s struggle reflecting book contains the intellectual articles related to“various
aspects of idealism", as declared by the author. This book, being important for Turkish language, Turkish
literature and Turkish culture, was evaluated in terms of vocabulary by corpus-based methods. Word Smith
Tools 7 was utilized for the evaluations. Based on the resultant data, vocabulary world of Atsız were
evaluated in the axis of meanings and diversity, and discussed in details. A total of 75 different words,
which are derived from stem word Turk in the text by derivational affix, or endings inflected or used
together with another word in a different meaning, were counted. The frequency of these words together
with Turk is 620, with a ratio 15.3 % considering all of the words. The most frequently used words after
Turk are Turkey (60) and Turkish (58) words. The frequency repeat of these words by the author, who lives
his life and works in the direction of Turkish idealism and dedicates them to eternity of his nation and
people, should be the indication of his enthusiasm to conduct his ideas to his readers.
