The article aims to discuss some specifics of the manner in which German, on the one hand, and Romanian, on the other, adapt, from a formal and functional point of view, the Greek and Latin borrowings with the -ikós / -icus suffix. The contrastive analysis reveals the fact that, in the borrowings’ tailoring process, German tends to make use to a rather significant extent of procedures such as replacing and adding a suffix respectively, while Romanian, as a Latin descendant, does not have any difficulties in formally assimilating the mentioned borrowings, yet frequently using a conversion procedure to satisfy its semantic needs. On the other hand, a central part of the analysis will be occupied by an etymologically grounded lexical category – that of etymological doublets –, and one of the article’s conclusions is that the mentioned borrowings represent homonyms and etymological paronyms respectively.
