The growing of obesity in the last decades made possible the identification of the relation between abdominal visceral fat, resistance to insulin and a new clinical entity associated with these factors, which presents increased risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus type 2, known as metabolic syndrome. There is a close relationship between the metabolic syndrome and aspects of diet and physical activity, which are
associated to the prevention/ protection of the metabolic syndrome, as well as to the recovery of the healthy/ appropriate nutritional status. The objective of the present study was to analyze diet factors and physical activity in the prevention and treatment of the metabolic syndrome. The study consists of a qualitative exploratory bibliographic review, using as data base Bireme, Capes Journals and Scielo, as well as literature and
written journals. It was noticed that weight control is the basic component in the prevention and treatment of the metabolic syndrome, because when there is no fat, especially of the abdominal type, there will be no production of inflammatory mediators and, consequently, promotion to the insulin resistance. Therefore, an appropriate diet combined with the regular practice of physical activity promote the improvement in the
insulin sensitivity, through weight control, resulting in beneficial effects on all the abnormalities related to the metabolic syndrome.
