The present study explores two martyrological poems by HristoBotev – “The Hanging of Vasil Levski” and “Hadji Dimitar”. Both works are thought of as scenes of sacrifice. In Botev’s poetry it is only in these two works that a landscape, with a sacrificial crisis in its centre, appears. The sacrifice is represented as an event of significant and notable importance to the community. In “Hadji Dimitar”, however, nature takes the place of the community. I focus on the agrarian substrate of the poem in relation to its mythological potential. Botev provides two different models of consecration: Judeo-Christian (“The Hanging of Vasil Levski”) and pagan (“Hadji Dimitar”). Ultimately, the author invents the landscape of a modern sacrifice, based on an anarchistic sensitivity, while indirectly including himself in that same landscape.

The present paper provides a historical perspective of representations of Bulgarian immigrants in Bessarabia and their descendants on how it is possible to preserve their own ethno-cultural identity in the conditions a multiethnic environment, how to resist assimilation, and subsequently – what tasks the community and its leaders have assigned to native language education. Several attempts by Bulgarian immigrants to organize native language education are considered; the author analyzes whether – and to what extent – there were special requirements for the content of the training. Summing up the history of the education of the Bessarabian Bulgarians, we can conclude that it is in fact a history of contradictions between the aspirations of Bulgarians to teach their children in their native language and the state policy of Russia, Romania, the USSR and the Republic of Moldova. Based on the documentation and scholarly papers on the issue at hand, the following conclusions have been made: until the 1930s, the very right to learn one’s native language was denied per se, whereas recognizing the ethno-identification content of the native language as well as understanding the need to overcome ethnocentrism in the process of teaching and learning the native language and culture have been characteristics of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

The greatest and most important works of Latin Christian literature date back to IV–V cc. These works are a result of the specific Christian conception of man and the world. In the present paper I explore the attitude of the Christian writers towards the world and its words, towards the verbal communication and the ancient non- Christian literature. The genres and kinds of the Christian literature, as well as its subjects, are also considered. Тhe highest, eternal meaning of the Christian sermon is explained.

Тhis article comes in connection with the 60th anniversary of the death of Polish writer Zofia Kosak (1899– 1968). Нer most famous novel, Krzyїowcy (Crusaders), is mainly related to the First Crusade (1095–1099), but here we focus on an episode of the novel, which is a little deviant from the theme of the First Crusade and refers to another historical context. Thе article deals with the interpretation of Zophia Kosak of an important event of Bulgarian history – the return to Bulgaria after the defeat at the Battle of Belasitsa (1014) of Bulgarian soldiers blinded by the Byzantine emperor Basil II. We try to find the answer to the following questions: How, according to the novel Krzyїowcy, this event blends into the context of the First Crusade; Is there anything in common with the fate of the Bulgarian and Polish warriors in the XI century? Is it possible that the author has created “her own” “Bulgarian folk song”?

The fast changes in the distribution of information (the growing popularity of social media) have led to – in the current political paradigm – the formation of specific strategies in journalistic behaviour in the virtual space. The following types of relations can be said to have been marked by the characteristics of those changes: employee – employer, journalist – society, journalist – journalist, journalist – the state.

The paper examines Iliya Todorov’s book “On Botev’s verse”. I focus both on the researcher’s conclusions, generalizations and statements, and on the various mechanisms through which he arrives at them. The paper discusses Todorov’s analyses of the existential status of the poems, their variations, the editions in which they were published, the numerous editorial interventions. It raises questions concerning our idea of the poet – how we understand and think about his genius, how we perceive and read his poetic legacy; it also discusses the role of the author with regard to authenticity and tradition.

The paper aims to demonstrate that the aorist participles active, when used as adjectives in combination with the verb be, take the role of a component of the ‘predicative’ syntactic entity (in a copula construction). We describe a simple algorithm for distinguishing between the aorist participles active which have become adjectives (and when combined with the verb be, form copula constructions), and the aorist participles active which remain in the group of the non-finite verb forms (and form periphrastic verb forms with the verb be). Further consideration is given to some other issues related to the aorist participles active.

A Round Table discussion entitled “Botev and Bulgarian Literature” (Veliko Tarnovo, 12 October 2018), dedicated to the 170th anniversary of the birth of the renowned Bulgarian revolutionary and poet, was organized by the Department of Bulgarian Literature and the Faculty of Modern Languages Library at St. Cyril and St. Methodius University of Veliko Tarnovo. Papers and presentations were delivered by literary scholars from The University of Veliko Tarnovo, The New Bulgarian University, St. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia, Paisii Hilendarski University of Plovdiv, The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and by high school teachers in Bulgaria. The discussions were centered on issues related to the historical and cultural heritage of Bulgarian people, Botev’s vision of Europe and his esthetic views. Special attention was given to Botev’s historical reception as a national poet and a political figure.

The turbulent – in a historical sense – era of ІV–V cc. was at the same time the Golden Age of Christian literature. The issue of the Roman Empire, which was the homeland of most of the Church authors at that time, is discussed in the Latin Christian literary works of this period. What was the attitude of the Christian writers towards the political entities, which called themselves „homelands“? What kind of travels did the Christians during ІV–V cc. undertake, what were the reasons for them and what was their purpose? And finally, what did the Christians actually strive for in their journeys and in their lifetime as a whole? The following paper aims to answer these questions.

The so-called cultural stereotypes are often discussed in the spheres of intercultural communication and foreign language education no matter what the target language is. It is also a theme that is dealt with in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR, 2001) along with topics such as intercultural competence. The following paper attempts to define the term “stereotype” which will help us find out what the role of cultural stereotypes in Japanese language education at Veliko Tarnovo University is. The aim of the research is to reveal the image of the Japanese from the point of view of: 1) Bulgarian media and 2) Bulgarian students of Japanese language at Veliko Tarnovo University (VTU). In 2) we will discuss whether this image changes after a visit of Japanese students to VTU.

Die Stimmen von Marrakesch (1967) is one of the characteristic texts produced by Bulgarian-born Austrian writer and Nobel prize winner Elias Canetti. On the one hand, his Aufzeichnungen nach einer Reise (A Record of a Visit) lays the foundations of the aphoristic style of his multi-volume “records”, and, on the other hand, is imbedded in the European tradition of travel writing as a genre dedicated to memoir culture. The paper traces the rhetoric of memory as a narrative principle, unifying the impressions of the traveller as a by-standing observer of the real journey, his reflections on the stories further developed in his imagination and his rhetorical devices for the articulation of universal human ideas.

The paper presents maritime writer Georgi Ingilizov’s (1955–2018) concepts, ideas and initiatives (editorial activity, filmography) related to the status of Bulgarian maritime fiction and its place in Bulgarian literature. The paper also traces the maritime writer’s creative path and addresses the main aspects of his maritime prose related to sailors’ values and problems. The text corresponds to an interview with the author, published in this issue.

The naming of places according to local vegetation is a universal way of creating toponyms, a considerable part of which is derived from common names of localities, denoting ‘a place where a particular plant (fruit) grows’. Studying such toponyms can enrich the current locality-labelling data with new, hitherto unknown ones, as well as complete the pattern of the folk taxonomy of fruit. Nomina loci, as a separate word formation category, is well studied in both literary Bulgarian and its dialects. The present study aims to reconstruct the common names of localities, motivated by names of fruit, which have been preserved in Northern Bulgaria toponymy. There is a list of locality names derived from different kinds of toponyms. Some of these names expand the currently known ‘nomina loci’ word formation categories by providing new names. The analyses also show that the toponymy has preserved a fair number of archaic lexemes, formed through rare and antiquated suffixes with a locative function, which have not been registered in earlier research of locality names.
