Introduction: One of the subjects of interest in women's health includes premenstrual pathology. It
evolves its study because of the condition that involves and the interference that produced the
usual performance.
Objective: To characterize premenstrual syndrome in students from the Universidad Metropolitana
of Barranquilla. A prospective descriptive study with application of survey, the characteristics of the
menstrual cycles of 181 voluntary students were recorded.
Materials and methods: The premenstrual syndrome arose in 19.9% of students, the average
disability of 2 days. The 86.1% had between two and five symptoms.
Results: Average age of 21.9 years, with premenstrual syndrome of 21.5 years. 69.4% of patients
are disabled from 2 to 8 days. In relation to sexual activity and the use of hormonal contraceptives,
showed fewer symptoms. 33.3% presented two symptoms, 22.2% three, 19,4% five. The most
common emotional symptom was the depression with 25%. The most common pathophysiological
symptom was abdominal pain with 77.8%.
Conclusion: There are significant statistical differences between the number of symptoms with
premenstrual syndrome and those that do not, (p = 0, 000 and Chi square = 64,56). It is 3.2 times more likely that women who do not develop PMS have had sexual life than those that it had (OR = 3.2, 95% CI = 1, 449 - 6,941, p = 0, 0024). We found significant differences between developing premenstrual syndrome and the use of contraceptives and fewer symptoms (p = 0, 000; chi square
= 51,65).
