Impacts of EVFTA on the exportation of Vietnamese agricultural products to the EU market

This study aims to appraise the potential impacts of the European Union - Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) on Vietnam’s agricultural exports to the European Union (EU). The authors apply the SMART model to quantitatively estimate how tariff elimination under this agreement affects trade value between two parties, with the base year of 2018. By simulating the zero-rate tariff scenario for 17 two-digit HS codes of agricultural goods, the authors analyze the total change in export, trade creation, and trade diversion effects of the whole sector. The four important product groups that witnessed the highest change, including HS 04 (dairy produce, birds’ eggs; natural honey; edible products of animal origin), HS 08 (edible fruit and nuts, peel of citrus fruit or melons), HS 09 (coffee, tea, maté, and spices) and HS 20 (preparations of vegetables, fruit, nuts or other parts of plants) are further classified into products with 4-6-digit HS codes to find out the specific product lines that benefit the most. The SMART outputs reveal that EVFTA positively affects the export of agricultural products from Vietnam to the EU market, with trade diversion dominating trade creation effects. Based on these findings, recommendations are proposed to the state authorities as well as domestic enterprises to promote the export of farm produce.

CEO demographic characteristics and firm performance: an empirical study in the scientific research and technology development industry

The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of the chief executive officer (CEO) demographic characteristics including CEO age, CEO gender, and CEO education on the performance of firms in the scientific research and technology development (SRTD) industry context. The crosssectional data employed are collected from the General Statistics Office of Vietnam’s survey on corporations in 2017 with three samples, which include SRTD firms, certified SRTDs as CSRTD firms, and the SRTD industry as a whole. The least-squares analysis, robust regressions, statistical parametric and non-parametric tests are conducted to analyze the data. Firstly, it is found that the association between CEO age and firm performance is different between SRTD firms and CSRTD firms and statistically non-significant to the SRTD industry as a whole. Secondly, female CEOs of SRTD firms operate their businesses better than their male counterparts while the opposite is witnessed in CSRTD firms. For the whole SRTD industry, male CEOs outperform. Thirdly, for SRTD firms, the higher education of CEOs does not ensure higher performance. Nonetheless, CEOs with master’s degrees do have better performance than CEOs with bachelor’s degrees. These results are consistent in all estimation models being employed. The study is the first to examine factors affecting the performance of firms in the SRTD industry.

Investigating the willingness to pay for green hotels: the effects of destination image and environmental beliefs

This study proposes and evaluates a framework in examining the effects of destination image and environmental beliefs on the willingness to pay (WTP) for green hotels. Additionally, the study finds that the role of customer attitude to green hotels has an important role in the proposed framework. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire with 317 valid responses. CFA and SEM were employed to analyze data through SPSS AMOS 20.0 software. The findings show that destination image has the largest direct impact on attitude to green hotels while environmental beliefs have the largest direct effect on WTP premium for green hotels. Moreover, attitude to green hotels plays a mediating role between destination image and the WTP and between environmental beliefs and the WTP.

Identifying work-related factors influencing job satisfaction using job descriptive index questionnaire: a study of IT companies in Hanoi

IT professionals’ job satisfaction is important in minimizing turnover, improving job performance, minimizing absenteeism, and increasing the level of job involvement. The primary purpose of this study is to measure the job satisfaction of IT professionals and to identify which factors influence job satisfaction the most in Hanoi’s IT companies. The study also investigates the relationship between job satisfaction factors and the overall job satisfaction by using the Job Descriptive Index (JDI) and Job General Index (JGI) questionnaire to evaluate the construct validity of factors. Data were gathered from a survey of 326 IT professionals in systems development to capture perceptions regarding workrelated factors on job satisfaction and organizational commitment. The results of this study indicate that compensation and benefits, co-worker, promotion opportunities, nature of work, and supervision are positively related to job satisfaction. Based on these findings, the study provides implications to business executives in the IT businesses.

An empirical analysis of factors affecting the intention of using digital wallets in Vietnam

This study investigates factors affecting consumers’ behavioral intention of using digital wallets in Vietnam. The research model consists of five independent variables, namely performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions, and perceived risks. The sample size of this study is 280. This study confirms that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions positively influence the behavioral intention of using digital wallets. Importantly, performance expectancy and effort expectancy are the most significant determinants of behavioral intention. Perceived risks are found to negatively affect the behavioral intention of using digital wallets. These findings indicate that service providers ought to focus on enhancing digital wallets’ user-friendliness, features, and functions to improve financial transactions via digital wallets. The security system of digital wallets also needs improving to reduce risks, thereby encouraging Vietnamese consumers to utilize the service.

A study of the factors affecting the willingness to engage in business-university cooperation

While developed countries have been aware of the important role and built successful models of business-university cooperation, in Vietnam, this cooperation has not been paid enough attention to and has not yet been implemented. To improve the situation, this study develops a model of factors that affect the businesses willingness to participate in the business-university cooperation of Vietnamese companies. Utilizing data collected from interviews with 58 enterprises and applying the EFA factor analysis and regression analysis, the study finds that two factors, which are the awareness of benefits, and barriers, affect the willingness to participate in business-university cooperation have been found with a regression model. While awareness of benefits promotes the businesses willingness, Barriers prevent owners/ managers from engaging in such relationships. Based on the research results, some solutions are proposed to enhance the willingness of companies.
