This article presents a critical overview of the European translations of Shakespeare’s Sonnets, including the Bulgarian ones. The problems of translation are discussed under three general rubrics: (1) problems owing to prosodic differences between English and other languages; (2) problems owing to differences between the English and other poetic traditions; (3) problems owing to the specific features of Shakespeare’s poetics. The last two sections of the article are devoted to a discussion of basic translation strategies and the tendencies in the historical development of the European translation of the Sonnets.

This article is a first attempt at a more detailed presentation of Geo Milev’s German-Bulgarian Dictionary manuscript completed in 1916, as well as of its printed edition from 1940, revised by Dimitar Stoevski and published by Ivan Koyumdzhiev. A comparison between the manuscript and the print edition shows significant differences in the way in which the lexicographical information is organized, in the macro- and microstructure of the dictionary, in the translation of German words as well as in the listed collocations and phraseological units. This paper is a modest contribution to the historical study of German – Bulgarian bilingual lexicography.

The paper focuses on the semantic stratum of Turkish words and their density level in language material from the end of the 19th century. Their functional characterization is examined in view of the semantic spheres where they are active. A language corpus of Turkish loan words distributed in 16 thematic groups is adduced and P. Hitov’s patterns of defining and substitution of such words with their Bulgarian equivalents are examined. Conclusions are drawn regarding their distribution and stylistic marking versus their state, in Modern Bulgarian.

In literary translation practice issues related to culture-specific lexemes are mostly dealt with on microtextual level. This means that a suitable lexical counterpart is sought for each word which is considered to be an isolated unit within the text. However, this microtextual approach seems to be problematic as culture-specific lexemes do not yield to mere substitution of source and target lexemes but require a precise interpretation by the translator. In view of the the aim of the paper is to present a macrotextual approach for translating culture-specific lexemes based on a case study. A major advantage of such an approach is that cognitive reconstruction of reality comes to the foreground.

Bulgarian dialectologists live with the myth that today’s village is similar to the old patriarchal settlement in which there is no social culture. Therefore, they believe that classical dialectological research methods and ways of description are still valid. This paper argues that the modern Bulgarian village has undergone considerable change and its language can be studied only by sociolinguistic methods.

The 1960s and 70s are an interesting period in the literary history of Romania. The present paper is a part of more extensive research on Romanian novels from this period with regard to time, space and opposition strategies therein. The novels disclose secrets about the communist rule of the 1950s fraught with concentration camps, repressions, rigid censorship and ideologisation of culture at all levels. Authors faced the challenge to try and slip in critical remarks about the new ruling class along with criticism of the past. During the period discussed in the paper there was a significant number of literary texts in Romania which were characterized by documentary features and bold socio-political criticism.

Despite their common and frequent usage in grammar, transitivity as a pivotal linguistic category and the closely related notion of Object have always posed considerable theoretical problems. The strictly formalistic approach of autonomous syntax does not lead to a satisfactory exhaustive definition of the term ‘Object’. In traditional structural grammars on the other hand the notion has been broadened so that it subsumes clausal constituents with rather inhomogeneous characteristics. Theoretically most viable for the account of predicate – object relations is the framework of Functional Grammar with its concepts of predicate frame and Object assignment. Within that theoretical framework we have outlined in this paper a productive pattern in English for the derivation of transitive predicates from intransitive ones.

Object of research in this paper are theological terms in the Middle Bulgarian translation of John Chrysostom’s Of the Seraphim. The analyzed theologisms are grouped into three groups on a structural principle and the development of their semantics has been traced in the direction of expanding or narrowing. Lexemes missing in the Old Bulgarian literary language have been compared with Middle Bulgarian texts originating from the 14th century. The findings point to the role of the Greek terminological system in the formation of the Middle Bulgarian one.

The aim of the current article is to present the contributions of Bulgarian scholars to the recognition of Partenii Pavlovich’s Autobiography. The digest of research literature starts with the work of J. Ivanov. He is the first to discover the meaning of Partenii’s personality in terms of the spiritual and historical development of Southern Slavic people. The author comments P. Dinekov’s contribution for including Partenii in the list of 19th century Bulgarian writers. Studies by many other authors are alsotaken into account, including that of P. Boyadzhiev which is currently the only existing holistic study of P. Pavlovich’s life and creative work. This publication also outlines the direction for future interpretations of Partenii’s character – a sufferer in life and yet a man of action

The Slovak Romantic Movement arises in a time when classicism is in its decline in European art and philosophical idealism and rational knowledge are giving way to intuition, spontaneity and wild imagination. Modern aesthetic and artistic impulses gain popularity in Slovakia in the 1830s and meet with a positive response from the young generation of lycйe-students in Bratislava, Levoиa and Kežmarok. The gradual transition to the aesthetics and poetics of romanticism in the end of the 1930s and the beginning of the 1940s brings about a number of metamorphoses in the cultural-historical consciousness of the Slovak romantic author, who, in the spirit of Štúr’s ideal for “unity of spirit and matter”, creates distinctive romantic norms. He is inspired both by intuitively-emotional impulses and by his own historical destiny, by folk literature, by national idiosyncrasies and the need for literary, cultural and spiritual identification.

Plato’s Allegory of the Cave is an early example of currently still ongoing debates on the principles of reflection, the conditional nature of the imaginary world and the relativism of cognitive psychology. This text posits certain narrative archetypes applicable to the discussion of image based thinking, transformations of ideas, objects and simulacra, as well as the open character of the verbal representation of these processes. Based on various visualizations of the plot from the time of the Renaissance to the present day, the paper illustrates the Allegory’s interpretative potential and poses certain questions to the modern world of multimedia products.

The aim of the current article is to present the contributions of the Bulgarian researchers to the acknowledgment of the Partenii Pavlovich’s “Autobiography”. The review of the scientific research starts with the work of J. Ivanov. He is the first to discover the meaning of Partenii’s personality in terms of the spiritual and historical development of the southern Slavonic people. The author comments the contribution of P. Dinekov for including Partenii in the list of the Bulgarian writes of the 19th century. Studies of many other researchers are also reviewed, including the study of P. Boyadzhiev. This author created the only existing holistic research of the life and deeds of P. Pavlovich. The article analyses problems of constructing of remembrance and memory in the literary text and the specifics of the fictive narrator and autobiographical writing in the prose of Herta Mьller and Catalin Dorian Florescu. Special attention is paid to the different aesthetic strategies in reconstruction of the past and to the theoretical discussion about similarities and differences of the terms “writing in emigration” and “postcolonial narrative”. Texts are interpreted, which reflect the forms of suffering and resistance during Ceausescus’s dictatorship and the painful concussions after 1989 in post socialist Europe.

The Battle of Chocim (1621) belongs to the greatest battles of the first half of the seventeenth century in Europe. The Polish Army that took part in it consisted of about 55–60 thousand soldiers who fought against 110,000 Turkish warriors. In total, the army of Osman II was twice as numerous as the Polish forces. Descriptions of the Battle of Chocim in diaries and chronicles were composed in a chronological pattern. The authors describe the events day after day, sometimes choosing the most important moments of the campaign. Not all stages of the Chocim campaign were subject to particular interest of chroniclers. Most of them failed to mention the cause of the outbreak of the conflict, going straight to the description of the military campaign. According to an old Polish legend, this campaign was triggered by an apology war. The victory was praised in numerous poetry publications. One of the components of the myth recorded in diaries is particularly twisted since the administration overstated the number of the troops of Osman II. Undoubtedly, the successful defense of the fortress saved Poland from even worse damage than that of the Tartar invasion. There is a lot of written evidence of the historical significance of the 1621 military campaign.

The high degree of a relationship between the Slavic languages raises the issue about the criteria by which they distinguish between them. Through different mechanisms of combinativeness and a lexicalsemantic distribution of the common vocabulary the common by its origin lexis has formed various Slavic languages. The collocations, or the syntagmatic organization of words, act as a sign of differentiality between the Slavic languages and they contain a number of specific features. In certain situations the characteristics of the collocation are linked with sociolinguistic processes of divergence of literary languages. The contemporary linguistic situation in South Slavic / Balkan Slavic area implement a certain revision of theoretical formulations and orientation to new methodological and applied perspectives.

This scientific article uncovers interesting facts, connected not only with the life and the biography of academic Nikolay Yakovlevich Marr, but it also opens questions about the genetics of the caucasian languages (and a part of the Kartvelian languages, to which the Laz language is connected , along with his native language the Georgian language). His scientific researches are bonded with those languages, and his research about the Eastern studies and the Caucaus studies. In this one we are paying attention on the Genetic links among those languages, no metter whether they are fully established or ascertained only partially. Through this research work we were faced with many challenges on its new teaching language> or the so called Japhetc theory>. With the name of Marr, it is connected the enforcement of the so called Marr’s quotes, determining the meaning of the word.
