The contributions of pavement structure and features, rehabilitation techniques, climatic conditions, traffic levels, layer materials and properties, pavement distress, and other factors causing changes in pavement smoothness are not well documented. As a result, it becomes difficult to select the appropriate pavement structure, design features and rehabilitation strategies to ensure pavement smoothness. This study focuses on analysing the available LTPP data for asphalt pavements in California by investigating the correlation between the pavement roughness and the effect of pavement temperature, precipitation, fatigue, age of pavement, rutting, and the average annual daily truck traffic. IRI has been identified as the factor characterizing pavement smoothness. Results indicated that when diving pavement sections between three different groups according to the annual precipitation for pavement section in the State of California, the IRIchange can be predicted with 93.5% accuracy for sections with less than 200mm of annual precipitation, 85.9% accuracy for sections with annual precipitation between 200mm and 90mm, and 90.1% for sections with annual precipitation higher than 900mm.

Demand for natural aggregates in making concrete is increasing everyday. Concrete is widely used in turnkey projects and small-scale projects. An alternative sustainable coarse aggregate for natural coarse aggregate can reduce the amount of pollution and preserve natural resource. An attempt is made in this research project to use locally available soil from the site and flyash waste to prepare an alternative sustainable coarse aggregate for concrete to be used in small constructions. Concrete mix is prepared with natural aggregate and expanded flyash clay aggregate EFCA and their fresh state, strength and durability properties were studied. The slump value of EFCA concrete under same water content is similar to that of natural aggregate concrete. Compressive strength of 21.45 MPa is achieved for EFCA concrete, which is acceptable for normal structural concrete. Flexural strength of 3.67 MPa is measured. Rapid chloride penetration test conducted on EFCA concrete showed moderate resistance to sulfate attack and higher water penetration.

Three dimensional numerical investigations has been carried out on steel lamp post against vehicle impact using ABAQUS/Explicit finite element code. The response of steel pole was studied against vehicle impact subjected to varying speed and mass of vehicle, and varying thickness and impact location of pole. The geometry of steel pole was considered on the basis of Indian standard recommendations and choice of pole is based on conventional highway lighting applications supporting luminaire mounting heights. The constitutive and fracture behavior of steel pole has been predicted using JC model available in ABAQUS/Explicit and the material parameters of JC model for the available in literature. The response of metallic pole was studied against varying speed, mass of vehicle and impact location considering the influential factors which affects the pole significantly. In addition to that, the response of pole was studied against the varying thickness, i.e. the effective thickness of cylindrical pole may be decreased at later stage due to corrosion and environmental effects. The responses of steel pole have been studied and presented in light of reaction forces, deflection and Von-Mises stresses.

This paper presents a numerical evaluation of the shear strength of Cold Formed Steel Shear Wall Panels (CFS-SWPs) having 1.33:1 and 1:1 height-to-width aspect ratios with 0.76 mm steel plate sheathing thickness and 1:4, 1.33:1 and 1:1 height-to-width aspect ratios with 0.46 mm steel plate sheathing thickness, which are not provided by AISI S400. For this purpose, shell finite element (FE) models, validated with test results, are completed in ABAQUS v2018 with nonlinear geometry, material and connection. A good agreement is achieved between experimental and numerical results in terms of shear strength-lateral displacement and failure modes. It is concluded that, for a fixed height-to-width aspect ratio, the shear strength of SWPs having different screws spacing varying from 50.4 mm up to 152.4 can be assessed by interpolation using this FE method. However, by interloping the shear strength from 4:1 to 1:1 height-to-width aspect ratio, the shear strength can be underestimated; hence, it is more economical for practicing engineers to use the shear strength assessed by this proposed FE method for 1.33:1 and 1:1 height-to-width aspect ratios. Moreover, the effect of the sheathing thickness having 0.46 mm is evaluated and proposed as it lacks in data provided by the code (i.e., AISI S400).
