Introduction: Obesity is a chronic disease of multifactorial etiology, which causes serious damage to health of the individual but also the country's economy. Treatment strategies are combination therapies such as diet, exercise and medication. When it comes to more severe obesity, also known as morbid obesity, the most effective treatment is bariatric surgery. Purpose: To review the scientific literature on the effectiveness of nutritional counseling in pre-and post-operative patients undergoing bariatric surgery. Literature Review: Bariatric surgery is the surgery performed in the digestive tract to reduce food intake and absorption, leading to weight loss and improvement of comorbidities. The nutritional counseling before and after surgery leads to an improvement in weight loss, but also decreases the likelihood of nutritional deficiencies caused by micronutrients. Conclusion: With the aim of a healthy weight loss and the return to a normal life, is very important the role of nutritionist in bariatric surgery, both during pre and post surgery.
