Borders, as geographical concepts, are not strictly fixed in the context of the Ottoman Empire, but there are a number of circumstances and conventions for possible travel and acceptance of orders, beyond the native places of the traveling iconographers. The paper marks creations of iconographers who visited Bulgarian territory in different periods during XVII and XVIII century. Attention is paid to the styles and specific qualities of icons and frescoes, preserved in churches and monasteries.

Migration moves individuals in “alternative” ways. In the text, this notion is considered in two different perspectives. The first one is within the context of years-long process of movements between countries and homes, in different directions, for different periods of time, and under different circumstances. The second one refers to the change of this more or less dynamic way of transnational life of the Bulgarian – Syrian families during the last decade, which deprives them from the possibility of immediate contact with the loved-once “there”. As a result of the conflict in Syria, the life trajectories of the interlocutors underwent a peculiar transformation in order to find, establish and maintain ways of communication across distance. In this sense, the article addresses the topic of the adaptation of mixed couples and their children living in Bulgaria to the shifting conditions for co-presence with their Syrian relatives, as well as the adaptation of these new circumstances

This article discusses the risks of epidemics in the context of their very fat-tailed distribution, discovered by Nassim Taleb and Pasquale Cirillo. We dis-cuss the nature of complex systems, fat-tailed distributions and convexity of payoff to analyze the risk of epidemic by using data from Covid-19 up to 23rd of May 2020. We discuss findings about previous historic examples of pan-demics like the Justinian plague and their long-term cultural impact in order to understand the possible cultural changes after uncontrolled pandemic in the global world. We analyze the socio-economic impact of the numbers of deaths vs the measures taken against the virus and argue that losses are convex func-tion of the deaths irrespective of measures. We warn about cumulative post-epidemic impact on health care systems and the self-accelerating effects of further pandemics with zoonotic origin.

In 1914 the semi-monthly magazine “Otechestvo” [Fatherland] was published, intended for the fighters from the front - the Balkan War 1912-1913 was over and it is not yet known that in a year Bulgaria will go to war again - the European War 1915-1918. The magazine contains stories about the military exploits of Bulgarian officers and soldiers, works of art by famous writers, poetry and many photos and illustrations. The Belogradchik writer Georgi Savchev (1883-1949) also participated in the issues of Otechestvo from 1914 with poetry.

On March 4, 1977, the city of Svishtov was stroked by a devastating earthquake that killed over 100 people. Property damage have been inflicted on numerous residential and public buildings, factories, facilities and infrastructure. A considerable part of the city is trapped under the ruins. The state is mobilizing its entire available resources to recover material losses and to normalize life in the city. The tragedy triggers a wave of solidarity among the population throughout the country, albeit with mobilization of socialist propaganda. The reasons that led to the demolition of the buildings were identified by the experts involved. Guilty and punished, however, none. Although Svishtov is res-urrected from the ashes of a new life, this natural calamity has a lasting and indelible imprint on society.

Theological research on the problems and challenges of society is severely limited in its broad application. To a much greater extent this applies to theological research on the Bulgarian village and the religious life in it. Contrary to the general scientific attitude, an interdisciplinary project, with a leading direction in theology, tries to reach the spiritual, religious and cultural life of the population of four villages and two monasteries in the Vidin region. The reason for the realization of the project is deeply personal, but at the same time it is an open challenge for the manifestation of different thinking and action.
