The Penghu Islands are Taiwan’s largest adjacent islands located in the Taiwan Strait. However, the aquatic beetles are still poorly known. In order to understand the aquatic insect fauna of Taiwan’s offshore islands, a field survey was performed across Penghu islands and an investigation of museum collections was conducted. The results show that 15 species of aquatic beetles in five families are recorded from Penghu Islands, of which one is newly recorded in Taiwan: Helochares atropiceus Régimbart, 1903, and the following species are reported from Penghu for the first time: Berosus fairmairei Zaitzev, 1908, Canthydrus nitidulus Sharp, 1882, Cybister sugillatus Erichson, 1834, C. tripunctatus lateralis (Fabricius, 1798), Helochares neglectus (Hope, 1845), H. atropiceus Régimbart, 1903, Hydaticus rhantoides Sharp, 1882, Peltodytes sinensis (Hope, 1845) and Rhantaticus congestus Klug, 1833.

While Microstylum oberthurii Wulp, 1878 is a common species of robber fly in Taiwan, there are few records of its natural history. In the present study, the author describes the oviposition behavior of M. oberthurii, as well as the behavior of newly eclosed adults, based on seven years’ worth of field observations. In Taiwan, M. oberthurii adults are known to occur from June to August. Photos of M. oberthurii observations are provided, including a newly eclosed adult, oviposition, eggs and a first-instar larva.

This study represents the first in a series of papers which aim to elucidate the taxonomic and distributional issues of uncommon and unrecorded geometrid moths of Taiwan. Nine species are included, with six newly recorded: Eucyclodes infracta(Wileman, 1911); Megabiston plumosaria (Leech, 1891); Hypomecis hyposticta (Wehrli, 1925); Eilicrinia nuptaria Bremer, 1864; Apochima excavata (Dyar, 1905) and Planociampa chlora Yazaki & Wang, 2003. The recommended or newly proposed Chinese common names are also given, with comments, for four geometrid species that occur in Taiwan, i.e. H. hyposticta, Xyloscia dentifera Inoue, 1986, E. nuptaria, A. praeacutaria (Inoue, 1976).

The diving beetle genus Platynectes Straneo, 1939 of Taiwan is reviewed based on freshly collected materials and museum collections. The altitudes of habitats are different between two Platynectes species. P. babai Satô, 1982 appears to have a preference for higher elevations (from 750 to 2,000 meters), while P. gemellatus Šťastný, 2003 appears to prefer lower elevations (from 50 to 1,200 meters). In addition, P. babai was observed aestivating in wet mud during the dry season. A key to the Taiwanese species of Platynectes is provided.

Within the genus Macrosiagon Hentz, 1830, M. nasuta (Thunburg, 1784) (Coleoptera: Ripiphoridae) is one of the most thoroughly investigated parasitoids with respect to its host requirements. We report a new host record of M. nasuta, Eumenes labiatus labiatus (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) from Taiwan based on a specimen reared from a E. l. labiatus nest. This observation, along with the published data, support the notion that M. nasuta is exclusively a parasitoid of vespid wasps in the subfamily Eumeninae.
