Through the history of huminty, the wars, broke out because of different reasons between different
societies; are among the sources which supply the literature from the age of legend to modern
literature age. So, a new area which consists of works about different dimensions of wars called “war
literature” has occured.
Mehmet Emin Yurdakul is one of the names come to when thinking about Turkish War Literature. He
was born to wars put on end to Ottoman Empire and he grew up with these wars. The poet, witnessed
the social, pyschological and economic troubles because of Ottoman-Greek War, The Balkans War, First
Word War and Independence War, expressed the thoughts and the senses of Turkish society from the
beginning of his firs work, due to the family structure he belongs to, growing up and life style, sensitive
character and he gave examples from his life. At this point, he has some characteristics in common with
some man of letters who are at the same age. The aspect differs him from the others is that he tells the
life, the thoughts and the senses of Turkish society with the pure Turkish and syllabic meter which
formed by Turks. So, he was called “National Poet”, “the Poet of Folk”, as he formed a national
wholeress in both contents and shape in his poems.
Mehmet Emin Yurdakul, who has an important role in Turkish literature, is discussed in many works
related to from his period to today. In these works, his poor technics of poems and poetics are the top
critics to his works. However, these critics seem unfair by taking into consideration his poetics and the
term when these poets were written. The only aim of the poet who shaped his works in the most
depressed period of Turks lived, is not to reach the pure poem, his aim is not only express the pains but
also encourage the Turkish folk by reminding the values of them. At the same time, the poet trying to
shape the future by the help of the national senses and aims, struggles with the aim of being a light of
hope. Because for him, the poet is not only for the beauty but also for the goodness.
In this work, his language of poem that became the target of critics, has been valued by the terms of
war literature. The characteristics in poem language have been identified by means of war atmosphere,
shapes his works.
