In this work, the definition of travel journals as a genre of literature will be made in light of the enunciation theory from linguistics and semiotics, and perception theory from semiotics which is inspired by phenomenology. The aim is to reveal how semiotic techniques can be useful in foreign language education classes, by the use of travel journals. The travel journals (carnets de voyage, Fr.) form a genre of literature containing textual and visual signs, in which the work is comprised of notes and illustrations by a traveller writer. These artworks with varying contents regarding the enunciation techniques and ways of perception are highly suitable for teaching how to form subjective or objective discourse and for providing description techniques. The practice of using linguistic and visual signs in combination offers big help in comprehension and expression for foreign language learners in almost all skill levels. The aim of contemporary approaches in foreign language education, besides providing linguistic competency, is also about offering familiarity with the culture surrounding that language. The perception of differences between the source and target cultures is also part of foreign language education. The travel journals provide a view of the city from the traveller’s perspective. As depicted in The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, the language education has to be given inside a cultural context. The base for the teaching activity is to introduce the student both to the language and to the relevant culture; in other words, the student needs to learn to interpret both linguistic and social signs. In the classical method, one has course books usually presenting the foreign culture. In the meantime, the best way to know the “other” may be to look at one’s own self through the eyes of the “other”. We see how social signs change between cultures in not only travel journals but also travel literature texts, as is in “Persian Letters” by Montesquieu. We suggest the use of travel literature texts in language education classes in order to teach how to interpret cultural signs. Groups having various language skills can easily comprehend short texts of small-pieced structure thanks to their familiarity with subjects, people and places; and they can form similar texts basing on enunciation and perception techniques. This work brings also a new suggestion in semiotic techniques. Semiotics is a technique of analysis applied to meaningful wholes, revealing how a meaning is articulated. Writers do not use it as a means of creation. We suggest the use of it in the reverse direction as well, in the field of education, as a technique of creating texts. The learner, after understanding different usages in the text examples, will absorb different discourse strategies (objective or subjective discourse) and will form various texts regarding the presence amount of the enunciating subject in the discourse, and the perspective and sensation of the perceiving subject. During individual or group sessions, students with similar learning criteria will form highly variable texts. After learning with this technique, one can acquire the ability of interpreting and using both linguistic and social signs by doing writing exercises basing on certain text structuring properties

This study is performed to show the effects of Facebook in French language instruction as a tool. It seeks to analyze the activities of using Facebook in a position of learning French. To conduct this study, we set up a Facebook group with 23 students in French Preparatory Program and three teachers who lead the program in the Department of Translation and Interpreting, Faculty of Letters and Sciences, University of Mersin, in the study period 2014-2015 fall semester. This closed group, teachers shared topics of their courses, images, writings, videos and they want their students to answer to their questions in the group. The students are also participated to the activities making comments under the sharing, giving answers to asked questions, making themselves sharing on this platform. The course announcements were also shared in the group. Moreover, in the current application portion exemplary, extracts the students' works were made anonymous to protect the right to privacy. For the protection of the names and photos profiles have hidden. In the period of the application, the observation technique was used. At the end of the application a student survey was submitted as part of the copy of this study. For the analysis of survey data the content analysis technique was used.

Mirze Elekber Sabir is one of the realistic authors of the 20th century Azerbaijani Literature. He first wrote poems which were in line with the classical poem tradition. He used aruz prosody. Then he wrote poems around social themes. Humor stands out in the poems that he wrote in the journal “Molla Nasreddin” that was issued by Celil Memmedguluzade. He wrote under the pseudonym of “Hop hop”. These poems that he wrote with humorous style made him incredibly famous. Sabir used a lot of Persian words because it was a requirement in those periods. He used them especially in gazelles that he wrote. However, he wrote his satirical poems in colloquial language. Persian words are used less in these poems. The poet, who had a critical point of view, criticized everything that the thought that was misconducted in the society in his poems from despotism to women’s and children’s rights, from language and education to rights of workers and peasants. Sabir’s friend Abbas Sıhhat compiled and collected the poems that Sabri had written in miscellaneous journals to issue the book of poems “Hophopname”. Hophopname was written in Arabic as the period required so. However; its translations are available in Cyrillic and Latin alphabets. This review focuses on the poetry book of Mirze Elekber Sabir “Hophopname” and is based on the edition that was edited by Abbas Zamanov. The poems that are cited in Hophopname preserve the language and the style that was used by the poet as it is in Azerbaijani Turkish. The information is provided about the life and literary activities of the poet. His satirical poems that he wrote around miscellaneous themes have been addressed and review in respect of their content.

English movie has been proven to be an effective tool to improve English language learning process in classroom. However, very little empirical research has been carried out to determine students’ interest in this teaching material, especially in the view of the fact that high level of interest in a teaching and learning material aids motivation which is very essential for language learning. Two groups of students were selected for this study. The first group is a Masters of Art degree student in English who have studied in English medium schools since the beginning of their formal education while the second group has studied in Kannada medium school and they are currently learning spoken English in an English training institute. A survey was administered, this is followed by giving standardize English listening test which is a parameter to measure learners’ ability to comprehend English movie. Result presented in this paper shows that Indian English learners and speakers are more interested in local movie than in English movie irrespective of their level of English listening proficiency. This suggests that students’ lack of interest in English movie is an indication that English films might not be an effective tool for learning English.

The study of semiotics and semantics in Linguistic starts with Ferdinand de Saussure in the modern sense. Semiotics, known also as semiology, has the answer to the question how a sign that is present in the mind come into existence in immediate memory. According to this, signs comprise of signifier that is acoustic sound system and of signified that carries the meaning of a concept. In semiotics which is also a subject of sociology some of the signs have conventional features. The figurative usage of signs takes an important place in these conventional features. Semantic, shortly described as a science that analyzes meaning, is one of the most debatable fields of Linguistics. What gives rise to this discussion is the thought of meaning changes according to individuals and context. Dede Korkut book is a magic mirror that reflects worldview of Turks with the knowledge it includes. Those who know this book in all its parts will be able to find a lot of information regarding Turkish language, history, mores, belief system, mythology e.t.c. With this aspect, this book functions as a handbook of Ghuzz Turks. Some concepts take place with their figurative features in Dede Korkut and one of them is tree. The concept of tree provides significant clues as to belief system of Ghuzz Turks. Besides, this concept attracts notice since it used in nearly all the field of social life. In this study firstly information about importance and place of Dede Korkut in Turkish Literature will be discussed Later, semiotic and semantic will be analyzed with the aspect of this study. Finally the concept of tree in Dede Korkut will be analyzed with the aspect of semantic and semiotic.

The aim of the study is to investigate whether EFL instructors in a university preparatory school consider themselves bilingual, or not; and the reasons for the EFL instructors to consider themselves bilingual or not. For the purpose of the study, a qualitative research was carried out. Thirty EFL instructors participated in this study. The data were collected via an open-ended questionnaire. Analyzing the results indicated that most of the participants considered themselves bilingual. The results of the study emphasized the importance of awareness of being bilingual in order to empower EFL instructors, encourage them to use more L2 in the classroom, and raise their self-esteem as nonnative speakers of English. The findings help instructors to make them less concerned about the grammar and focus more on communication, and explain their students that they would be bilingual too. This study might be pedagogical help and significance to teachers interested in bilingualism in EFL context.

This book provides an overview of the theoretical basis of pragmatic examines the main theoretical perspectives and explores its methodological aspects. As for the pragmatic in its broadest sense, covering the whole range of social, cultural and cognitive construction of meaning through the use of language aspects. Assuming no background in the pragmatic, the text provides helpful summaries, chapter by chapter for suggestions of reading and research topics for further study. The book tries to ad-dress questions such as what do people do when language is used? How exactly the meaning is generated when we communicate? And why do we say when we say something else? This review gives an overall review of the book and seeks to cover the whole concepts that are mentioned; eventually the reviewers have given their comment and conclusion of the book.
