This study was aimed to examine the effect of black tea extract addition in diet containing 4% and 6% sunflower oil on ewe physiological responses and blood profiles from late pregnancy until early lactation. This study was designed using a 2×2 factorial completely randomized design with 5 replications on 20 late-pregnant ewes. The first factor was two levels of sunflower seed oil (4% and 6%) and the second factor was the levels of black tea extract addition (0 ppm and 500 ppm). Data were analyzed by using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Duncan’s multiple range test. Results showed that supplementation of sunflower seed oil and black tea extract had no effect on physiological responses and blood profiles of ewe during late pregnancy until early lactation except for erythrocyte numbers. Erythrocyte numbers were higher on 6% sunflower seed oil supplementation than that of 4% (P<0.05). In conclusion, addition of black tea extract in diets containing 4% and 6% sunflower seed oil limitedly affect physiological responses and blood profiles of ewe.

A study was designed to determine Kacang buck sperm membrane integrity and acrosome reaction as to the effect of different concentration of freeze drying fig fruit filtrate in tris egg yolk based extender. This study used 5 proven fertility Kacang goats aged 3-4 years, maintained by Faculty of Animal Sciences, Mataram University, Indonesia. Semen was collected by artificial vagina at every five days. The collected semen was divided into four aliquots in accordance to the treatments extender such as Control (0 gr), T1 (0.02 gr), T2 (0.04 gr) and T3 (0.06 gr) freeze drying fig fruit filtrate in tris egg yolk based extender (gr/v), respectively. Plasma membrane integrity and intact acrosome after re-concentration and preserved at 5ºC were assessed visually at 0 and every 24 hours for 5 consecutive days. The statistical significance of the result was evaluated by a one way ANOVA for completely randomized design analysis of variance. Data were presented as Mean±SD. Results suggest that the mean percentages of sperm membrane integrity in T0, T1,T2 and T3 at 96 h post extended and preserve at 5ºC were 34.3±5.3, 40.6±4.7, 44.8±5.4 and 42.1±5,1, respectively. The mean percentages of sperm acrosome intact were 16.4±4.8, 18.5±1.9, 21.6±3.1 and 19.6±2.8, respectively. The results of the study suggested that additional 0.04gr freeze drying fig fruit filtrate into tris egg yolk based extender have a significant preservation effect on both spermatozoa membrane integrity and acrosome intact of kacang buck.

The purpose of this research was to know the effect of breadfruit leaves flour in feed to blood profile and correlation between cholesterol, HDL and LDL of blood with meat cholesterol of maleTegal duck of 10 weeks old. The material used was Day Old Duck of male Tegal duck as much as 120 heads with experimental research methods and Completely Randomized Design (CRD). There were 6 treatments: feed without breadfruit leaf powder, feed + breadfruit flour 3% / kg feed, feed + breadfruit flour 6% / kg feed, feed + breadfruit flour 9% / kg feed, feed + flour breadfruit 12% / kg feed, and feed + breadfruit flour 15% / kg feed. Each treatment was repeated 5 times and each replication consisted of 4 ducks. The variables observed were the number of red blood cells, white blood cells, HDL, LDL, blood triglycerides, correlation between cholesterol, HDL and LDL blood with meat cholesterol of male Tegal duck of 10 weeks old. The result of the analysis showed that the supplementation of breadfruit leaves has significant effect (P <0,05) on the number of red blood cells, white blood cells, HDL, and blood triglyceride. There is a positive correlation between blood cholesterol with duck meat cholesterol which given breadfruit leaf powder. This research can be concluded that the supplementation of breadfruit leaf powder (Artocarpus altilis) can increase the number of red blood cells, white blood cells, blood HDL level but lowers blood cholesterol and triglyceride blood of male Tegal duck of 10 weeks old. Cholesterol meat is affected by blood cholesterol with regression coefficient of 0.780941, influenced by LDL (r = 0.407849), but negatively affected by HDL (r = -0.47022)

The research is conducted aiming at analyzing the physical, chemical, and sensory qualities of goat cheese with different temperatures and storage duration. The research materials are goat milk and L. plantarum TW14 and L rhamnosus TW2 isolates, and its equipments include a set of cheese production tools, colorimeter, and SEM. The variables analyzed are cheese’s physical quality (color and structure), chemical qualities (total titrated lactic acid) and sensory qualities (texture, flavor, aroma and likeness). The treatment consists of 2 factors, namely the first factor including: storage temperature (freezer and refrigerator) and the second factor: storage duration (0; 15; 30; 45 and 60 days) with 3 replicates. The obtained results indicate that storage temperature does not influence the cheese’s brightness level (L*), a* value (redness) and b* value (yellowness) and sensory qualities (texture, flavor, aroma and likeness), yet storage duration influences the cheese’s L* value (P<0.01). Storage temperature has significant influence (P<0.01) on the cheese’s lactic acid content, while storage duration has insignificant influence (P>0.05) on it. The cheese’s structure shows protein aggregate, void and lactic acid bacteria. The conclusion is that frozen-stored goat cheese still has good physical, chemical, and sensory qualities.

This study was designed to determine the phenotype characteristics of Sasak ducks in Lombok Island. The study used 64 Sasak ducks at production stage which were kept intensively by small holder farmers. Observations on the characteristics of the feather color were carried out directly on each animal. The data observed were feather colors, beak color, and the color of the foot and shank, while the data on the size of the body that was observed were body weight, beak length, neck length, back length, breast circumference, back length, thigh length, shank length, and the distance between the two pubic bones. The data obtained were tabulated and analyzed descriptively. The study concluded that the characteristic of the color of feathers in Sasak ducks were dominated by Roman color (50.13%), followed by Tanak color (21.87%), Tongkak color (15.63%), Rombak color (6.25%), and Cemaning color (3.12%). Sasak ducks with medium size were observed to have a relatively long beak, medium-long neck, short back, broad and deep chest, medium height, and the distance between the two pubic bones was quite wide. These characteristics indicate that Sasak ducks are the type of superior Indian Runner having better production ability compared to the other types of Indian Runner duck.

The objectives of this study were to identify polymorphism of transforming growth factor β2 (TGF-β2) gene associated with Salmonella pullorum resistance in Indonesian chickens. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) assays were used to genotype Indonesian chickens. Analysis of polymorphism was conducted by using PopGen 3.2 software. The effect of genotype on S. pullorum resistance was analyzed using the SAS General Linear Model (GLM) procedure. Genotyping was performed on 278 chickens from 7 Indonesian chicken populations (Sentul, Merawang, Pelung, Kampung, Parent Cobb broiler, The F1 crossbreed of Kampung x Parent Cobb broiler (KB) and F2 KB x KB. The product of amplification was 284 bp. The TGF-β2| RsaI locus was polymorphic in all populations, producing two alleles (T and C) and three genotypes (TT, CT, and CC). The result from the analysis of the allele and genotype frequency showed that the T allele had a higher frequency than the C allele in all populations. The χ2 analysis showed that the 6 chicken populations were deviated from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, with the exception of the Parent Cobb broiler chicken. The association result showed that TT genotype was significantly associated with S. pullorum resistance in Sentul chicken. Although the leukocyte concentration, leukocyte differentiation and H/L ratio in Sentul chicken with three of TGF-β2 genotypes (TT, TC, and CC) were not statistically different. In conclusion, polymorphism in the TGF-β2 chicken gene can be used as a candidate marker to increase S. pullorum immune response.

This paper aimed to evaluate the nutritive value and the quality of ensiled Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum) and banana (Musa acuminate) peelings. Different levels of banana peeling and Napier grass were used in this study. The levels of Napier grass and banana peeling compared as treatments with four replications were as follows: 100% Napier Grass (NG), 75% (NG) + 25% Banana Peeling (BP), 50%NG + 50%BP, 25%NG + 75% BP and 100%BP. Napier grass and banana peeling were mixed based on the percentage combination as treatments, weighed and placed into empty jam bottle with weights ranging from 64.4 grams to 509.2 grams as a simulated laboratory silo. Samples were stored in eight weeks at the Dairy Training Research Institute. Proximate analyses were done at Animal Nutrition Laboratory Institute of Animal Science while ADF, NDF, IVDMD, and IVOMD were done at the Animal Nutrition Division Laboratory at Dairy Training and Research Institute, UP Los Baños. Physically, the color of silage were light yellow with a little greenish color for 100% napier grass, light to moderately yellow for the three combinations of napier and banana peel and yellow for 100% banana peel. Texture ranged from dry and coarse for napier grass, relatively dry for the combinations and moderately wet for the banana peel. The napier grass had a slightly acidic smell, the combinations had slightly sweet, acidic smell while the 100% banana peel had a sweeter, acidic smell. Likewise, pH before ensiling had ranged from 5.7 (25%NG + 75%BP) to 7.5 ( 100% BP) while after ensiling the pH changed from 4.575 ( 100% napier grass) to 5.75 ( 100% banana peel ). There were significant differences on DM, Moisture, CP, EE, CF, and Ash before ensiling. Similar trend was observed after ensiling except the ash content of all the treatments. ADF and NDF did not show significant variations in all treatments. IVDMD and IVOMD before ensiling varied significantly, but after ensiling only IVDMD of the treatments differed significantly. In terms of physical attributes, nutritive value and digestibility, banana peel can be used as silage material. All treatments generated comparable acceptability when fed to the animal. It is suggested that further study, specifically in vivo trial, will be conducted to validate the feeding and nutritional value of banana peel as alternative silage for ruminants.

The objectives of the research were to supply nitrogen for protein synthesis of ruminal microbe from slow release urea and to supply post-rumen protein from soybean meal protected with condensed tannin (CT) from crude Leucaena leaves extract. In Experiment 1, slow release urea (SRU) was made by extrusion of cassava waste-urea, tapioca meal-urea and cassava meal-urea. Evaluation of SRU properties was based on residual nitrogen concentration and ruminal fermentation products (total volatile fatty acid and ammonia-nitrogen) in vitro. In Experiment 2, soybean meal protected with CT from crude Leucaena leaves extract as much as 1,68 g tannin/100 g DM soybean meal. SRU that was selected from Experiment 1 was used as the supplement in sheep ration whose protein source was protected with CT. SRU supplement in basal rations was 0, 6.36, 12.75, 19.11% DM. In vitro result in Experiment 1, showed that SRU of cassava waste, tapioca meal and cassava meal were different (P<0,01) on residual nitrogen content, total VFA, ammonia-N, and fermentation time. The optimum SRU obtained from cassava waste by inhibiting nitrogen hydrolysis up to 14 h. In Experiment 2, SRU supplementation of cassava waste on basal ration whose protein source was protected with CT increased dry matter (DM) degradability (P<0,01), total VFA (P<0,01), ammonia-N (P<0,01), and did not affect crude protein (CP) ruminal degradation. Post-ruminal degradability of DM and CP increased (P<0.01) in line with the increasing supplement, and reached the optimum level at 12,75 – 19,11% DM. In conclusion, cassava waste was a potent SRU through extrusion process and could be harnessed as SRU supplement in ration with protein source protected with condensed tannin to improve ruminal microbe protein synthesis.

Kebumen district is one of beef development centers in Central Java that requires numerous forage supplies (HPT). Farmers without personal foraging area have to buy forages almost on a daily basis. Forage business is an emerging and prospective business sector to improve farmers’ welfare particularly the income. Government is therefore expected to support in terms of facility and infrastructure to maintain a sustainable business practice. The aim of this study was to investigate the necessity of forage business in cattle development center in Kebumen district, forage marketing channel, forage business revenue, profit margin, R/C ratio and government support in terms of infrastructure or policy related to forage business.

Although domestic cavies are widely used in sub-Saharan Africa as a source of meat and income, there are only a few studies of their population structure and genetic relatedness. This seminal study was designed with the main objective to assess the genetic diversity and determine the population structure of cavy populations from Cameroon to guide the development of a cavy improvement program. Sixteen microsatellite markers were used to genotype 109 individuals from five cavy populations (Wouri, Moungo and Nkongsamba in the Littoral region, and Mémé and Fako in the Southwest region of Cameroon). Twelve markers worked in the five populations with a total of 17 alleles identified, with a range of 2.9 to 4.0 alleles per locus. Observed heterozygosity (from 0.022 to 0.277) among populations was lower than expected heterozygosity (from 0.42 to 0.54). Inbreeding rates between individuals of the populations and between individuals in each population were 59.3% and 57.2%, respectively, against a moderate differentiation rate of 4.9%. All the tested loci deviated from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, except for locus 3. Genetic distances between populations were small (from 0.008 to 0.277), with a high rate of variability among individuals within each population (54.4%). Three distinct genetic groups were structured. This study has shown that microsatellites are useful for the genetic characterization of cavy populations in Cameroon and that the populations investigated have sufficient genetic diversity that can be used to be deployed as a basis for weight, prolificacy and disease resistance improvement. The genetic of diversity in Southern Cameroon is wide and constitute an opportunity for cavy breeding program.

Aim of this study was to examine the characteristics cytology of mucous cell-,temperature- and pH vagina during estrous cycle in local sheep. 31local sheep were synchronized with vaginal sponge consist of 20 mg progesterone hormone before carried out observations of cytology of cells from the vaginal mucose through vaginal swabs, temperature and pH of the vagina. Vaginal swabs were collected daily at 7 am for a weeks.Vaginal temperature and pH measurement is carried out twice a day, at 07.00 am and 15.00 pm for a weeks after vaginal swabs. Smears of the swab were then prepared on glass slide and they were stained with Giemsa. Vaginal epithelial cells; Parabasal, intermediate and superficial cells were counted and their percentages during pro-estrous, estrous and di-estrous were determined. Di-estrous was characterized by the absent of superficial cells in the epithelial vagina. Pro-estrous was characterized by the increasing progressively of intermediate/superficial cells in epithelial vagina, whereas estrous was characterized by the presence of superficial/cornification cells in most epithelial vagina. Based on the dominance of superficial cell, the number of sheep identified as estrous is highest on third day, with 52%. Observation on vaginal temperature also resulting that the highest temperature values obtained on the third day of 39,08±0.28°C. It could be effected of the vaginal pH during the observation. Underthe influence ofestrogen, the epithelial vaginalcellssynthesizeand accumulateglycogenin large quantitiesdepositedin the lumen ofvagina. Vaginal bacteriametabolizethe glycogenformlactic acid, which causesvaginal pHis low.The pH conditions prevent from pathogenic microorganisms and fungi. Increased estrogenal so cause cell proliferation through the thickening of the epithelium lining of the vagina so that the cells differentiate.Increasing of glycogenin the superficial cells, and ceratin cells found in the cytoplasm of cells, as well as acidic pH in the lumen vagina causing changes in the chemical composition of each cell (Zaid, 2011).It can be concluded that during estrous phase, cytology of vaginal mucose cell is dominated by superficial cell and vaginal temperature is increasing as well as pH of vagina.

Fat, cholesterol and fatty acid profile of breast and thigh meat of 12 Muscovy ducks (6 drakes) aged 8 weeks from the local farm in Bogor, West Java were analyzed in thus study. In general, Muscovy ducks were fed with rice bran twice a day and free-ranged in the backyard. The nutrition of rice bran is varied in crude protein, crude fiber, fat, and ash content. Muscovy ducks were slaughtered and the percentage of carcass weight, fat, cholesterol and fatty acid profile of the breast and thigh meat were measured and analyzed. The result showed that the breast meat had higher (P<0.05) ω3 total fatty acid EPA (C20:5ω3) but DHA (C22:6ω3) and linolenic acid (C18:3ω3) were not significant compared to that of thigh meat. Concentration of linolenic acid in breast meat ranged from 0.26 to 0.51% of fat and 0.35 to 0.39% of fat in thigh meat. Linoleic acid (C18:2ω6) in breast and thigh meat was 7.64 - 10.73% and 5.17 - 13.93 % fat, respectively. DHA concentration ranged from 0.13-1.31% fat in breast meat and EPA in thigh meat was approximately 0.08-0.32 % fat. EPA was significantly higher (P<0.05) in breast meat (0.03-0.28 %) than thigh meat (0.05-0.08 %) The study produced ω 6:3 ratio ranged 6.50-24.14 and 8.94-31.64 in breast and thigh meat, respectively.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the anthelmintic efficacy of the ethanolic and aqueous extract of coffee husk fermented by Pleurotus ostreatus against Ascaridia galli. In vitro study of anthelmintic activity was conducted by counting the number of paralyzed worm body of Ascaridia galli during 24 hours in petri dish containing different levels of ethanolic and aqueous extract of fermented coffee husk, namely 0%, 1%, 2%, 3% and 4% (w/v) and compared to piperazine 0,5% (w/v) and NaCl 0,9%. The powdered samples of fermented coffee husk were macerated in the 30% ethanol solution with the ratio samples to solution = 1:3. In aqueous extract, samples to solution ratio was 1 : 7. The extract of fermented coffee husk possess phytochemical compunds which responsible for anthelmintic activity. The anthelmintic activity of ethanolic extract was better than aqueous extract. Fermented coffee husk ethanolic extract exhibited mortality of A.galli at concentration 2% while showed highest mortality at concentration 4%.
