Maria Peregrina de Sousa was born in Porto, on February 13th
1809. The first name was simply Maria de Sousa, having the Peregrina added by
his uncle, because of all the changes that her family had made around Porto
during the French invasionofPortugal. It was amidst the turmoil of life that
Peregrina began her writings, and her first poem was sent to the Archivo
Pitoresco. Then, she began to publish in the Revista Universal Lisbonense, under
the pseudonym "Uma Obscura Portuense”, a series of writings on beliefs and
superstitions of Minho. The nickname and the nature of the writings left
everybodycurious, including the editor of the Journal, António Feliciano de
Castilho, who claimed to have been able to unravel the identity of the writer from
Porto. Friends, Castilho had a strong influence on Peregrina. Castilho led
Peregrina to publish in the journal Iris, in Rio de Janeiro, whose editor was besides
him, Barreto and Noronha. The aim in this paper is to discuss the participation of
Maria Peregrina de Sousa, a Portuguese writer in the periodical Iris.
