Water Quality Assesment and Health Risk Implications on Residents of Diobu, Port Harcourt Metropolis

The study interest was to ascertain the quality of water in the area and its influence of disease incidence. To achieve this, water quality analysis was also done for three water samples which were collected from public water boreholes. The parameters of interest to the study are pH, Total Dissolved Solids, E.coli, Total Heterotrophic Bacteria, Total Coliform Count, Chromium, Nickel, Cadmium and Lead, all these parameters were tested using standard operating procedure in line with World Health Organization (WHO) standards. The study showed that the quality of the water in the area is poor and polluted and hence possess great danger to life especially children and the aged. The study recommended that water regulatory authorities if not in place should be set up primarily to ensure water facility provision and maintenance in the area. Residents as well should be encouraged to boil their water before consumption as a measure to curtail the spread of water borne disease which is evident in the area. © International Journal of Ground Sediment & Water, ©Sun Jichao. Impact of Leachate Percolation on Groundwater Quality near the Municipal Open Dumpsite (Jam Chakro): A Case Study of Surjani Town, Karachi, Pakistan

Present study is aimed at assessment of landfill leachate migration impact on groundwater quality of Surjani Town. Groundwater samples (n=28) were collected at various depths (35-220m) and analyzed for various physicochemical characteristics. Data revealed that groundwater pH is highly fluctuating (ranges= 6.5 - 7.6; mean: 7.0) where about one third of total samples are acidic (range= 6.5 – 6.91). Remarkably high TDS content (range: 609 - 28100 mg/l; mean: 11946 mg/l) is reported. Major cations and anions vary in the order of Na (7293mg/l) > Ca (1049 mg/l) > Mg (998 mg/l) > K (44 mg/l) and Cl (5513 mg/l) > SO4 (2942 mg/l) > HCO3 (1408 mg/l) > NO3 (17 mg/l) respectively. Results of principal component analysis suggest landfill leachate percolation and mixing followed by water rock interaction in groundwater of study area. Extremely high concentration of measured parameters concluded that groundwater of Surjani Town is subjected to anthropogenic pollution by leaching of contaminants from Jam Chakro landfill site. © International Journal of Ground Sediment & Water, ©Sun Jichao. Radionuclide Actions, Processes and Presence in Water and Sediments, a Review

This study was carried out to review the actions of radionuclides, their formation processes and presence in water and sediments. Although since its discovery it has been found to play some negative role on man's health and destruction the solid part of the earth where man depends for his survival through agriculture. Hence this study focused on reviewing the works of other writers as to ascertain the role, sources, presences and action as well as the processes of radionuclide formation. The review showed that radionuclides are the sources of radioactivity and emit nuclear radiation which has become a part of our daily lives. The most common forms of ionizing radiation (released energy) are alpha particles, beta particles and gamma rays. The properties of radiations have wide applications in areas such as medicine, biology, industry, agriculture, and electric power generation. There are numerous health hazard associated with radiation exposure due to an overdose of it. The study also discovered that its sources occur from both natural and manmade and that different methods are applied in determining the presence of radionuclide and that some equipments have also been developed over the years that are used for detecting radionuclide. The study concluded that having understood that radionuclides occur through anthropogenic activities and noting its health effects, there is need to guide activities that bring about its existence and set in policies that could reduce actions that ignite its natural occurring process. © International Journal of Ground Sediment & Water, ©Sun Jichao. Community Attributes and Impact of Cult Related Activities across Selected Communities in the Niger Delta

This study examined the disastrous impact of cult related activities on selected communities in Niger Delta region from 1999-2017. Using a cross-sectional design, the study explored the impact of cult related activities on communities, and the characteristics of vulnerable communities. The population of the study was made up of households of selected communities impacted by cult violence. Sample size was derived using the Taro Yamane equation and copies of the questionnaire were administered for data collection. The result showed that for cult impact on the communities, assassination, displacement and looting were ranked highest, while rape and shut down of health and worship centres were ranked least among the impacts identified. Among the assets impacted, residences, health facilities and farmlands were ranked highest while communication and security facilities were ranked least. The result further revealed that social activities such as hanging out, age grade meetings, social belonging and political power struggle were prevalent in communities mostly impacted by cult attacks while socio-economic characteristics of such places includes high illiteracy, petty trading, crude oil production, farming activities, illegal crude oil bunkering, poverty and high unemployment. In addition, issue such as land dispute, chieftaincy tussle, cultural festivities and town union events were prevalent in these communities. It is recommended that initiation of social investment programs as intervention measure to empower youths and keep them engaged should be considered for these areas. © International Journal of Ground Sediment & Water, ©Sun Jichao.
