Diversity and Abundance of Birds in Dbla Church Forest, Eastern Tigray, North Ethiopia

The present study was carried out in Dbla St.merry church entitled with Diversity and Abundance of Birds species from July 2013 to June 2014. The abundant supply of food, the availability of resting and perching structures has made Dbla St.merry church a favorable area for different species of birds. Point count method was employed to record the relative abundance of individual bird species. During this study a total of 21bird species, including the endemic species such Wattled Ibis (Bostrychia carunculaa), White-collared Pigeon (Columba albitorques) and Thick-billed Raven (Corvus crassirostris) were identified. The species composition decreases during wet season due to the departure of migratory birds. The Vultures were usually observed flying over the study area, roosting on the roof of the church house, and also on the ground either being around of feeding. Feeding activity was from 06: 00 – 18:00 hr. Most of the vultures were observed coming from southwest direction of the study area.

Nest Density, Clutch Size and Egg Traits of House Crow Corvus splendens at Ghazikot Township, Mansehra, Pakistan

This study was conducted in Ghazikot Township (150 acre), Mansehra during 2014 breeding season. Mean nest density of the House Crow was 3.1 nests/acre. The mean clutch size recorded 4.1 egg ranged 3-6. Mean egg length and breadth37.6±0.71and 25.3±0.52mm, respectively. Mean egg volume 12.7±0.73cm3 and egg shape index calculated to be 1.48±0.022. Mean weight of the House Crow egg recorded 11.77±0.39g. There is no significant correlation exists between egg length and breadth in relation to different clutch size (P>0.05) and similarly there is no positive corelation exists between weight of House Crow eggsin relation to different clutch size (P>0.05).

Scanning Electron Microscopic (SEM) studies have been conducted on genitalic structures of Anopheles (Cellia) stephensi Liston for the first time from India. External genitalic attributes are highly species specific in many insect groups in general and mosquitoes in particular. Though the external male and female genitalic structures have already been studied by taxonomists in case of this most important vector species. Many additional characteristics have been found which will prove useful in sorting out species complex of this group.

Control of tick infestation in dogs in Peshawar, KP, Pakistan

Current study was conducted during the month of June-2014. Total 122 dogs were studied in Veterinary Research Institution Peshawar, Pakistan. In122 dogs that were presented to the institution, 22 dogs had the clinical signs of reduced food intake, loss of hair, and itching. They were restless and scratching with their legs, and constantly rubbed their bodies with the walls. Clinical examination revealed the presence of pruritus, alopecia and the formation of small crusts in dogs. All infected dogs (22) were treated with Ivermectin by subcutaneous injection dosed at 0.02 mL/kg body weight at a weekly interval for 3 to 4 weeks. All dogs were bathed with Cypermethrin shampoo weekly once for 3-4 weeks. In this study, it was observed that Ivermectin and Cypermethrin combination therapy was effective for the control of tick infestation in dogs.

RAPD based genetic diversity of freshwater snail, Pila polita in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is enriched with fish and other aquatic organisms and the freshwater snail Pila polita is one of them. Like other snails Pila polita is eco-friendly and economically important species, however, study related to genetics particularly diversity and relationships of this snail is very limited. This was the first genetic research of Bangladesh on this species. In this research Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique was performed for evaluating the genetic variability among individuals of Pila polita. Seven individuals of Pila polita were analyzed with three random primers such as B 03, C 04 and OPB 12. A total of 11 polymorphic loci were found in experimental samples. In this analysis, highest polymorphism (35.29%) was showed by the primer B03 and lowest polymorphism (25%) was showed by the primer OPB12. The highest and lowest inter-individual pair wise similarity was recorded 4 and 1 respectively. Genetic distance was observed with values highest 0.944 and lowest 0.556 among these experimental individuals. The highest and lowest linkage distance among individuals was observed 17.0 and 5.0 respectively. Nei’s genetic similarity was observed whereas highest and lowest values were recorded 0.500 and 0.111 respectively. In the cluster analysis, it was observed that most of individuals were distinctly related with each other.
