The objective of this study was to assess the feasibility of semen preservation of common carp, ornamental variety, in the refrigerator at 4 °C. Eight fish were used, pouring semen by abdominal massage. After application of crude extract of carp pituitary, the semen samples were extruded, and discarded the contaminated blood, feces and / or urine and showed that less than 80% motility. Each sample was divided into two tubes, one being maintained at room temperature (25 ± 3 °C) and the other kept in the refrigerator (4 ± 2 °C). For analysis of subjective motility, semen was pre-diluted by mixing one drop of semen + 4 drops of non-activating aqueous solution of NaCl 2%. The activation of the spermatozoa was performed by addition of 4 drops of distilled water to a drop of the mixture, since the microscope pre-focused. The analysis of sperm motility, both semen and kept at room temperature the stored under cooling, were taken every 1 hour. The motility of sperm (Y) is being reduced as a function of time held at room temperature (X) according to the equation: Y = 93.2 to 13.0. X (P<0.01; adjusted R ² = 81,7%). The cooled semen constant motility had a plateau of 91.5% motility for 4.4 hours, after which the spermatozoa (y) decreased with time under cooling (X), according to the equation: y = ± 130, 9 - 8.60. X (P<0.01, adjusted R ² = 79.7%). It was found that semen can be kept in the refrigerator until used for 11.7 hours.
