Ethnobotanical studies of the efficacy of five oils at graded levels on adult callosobruchus maculatus reared on cowpea.

The cowpea weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus is one of the major pests infesting stored pulse and is distributed worldwide. The efficacy of different dosage of botanical oils for the control of C. maculatus in a stored grain (cowpea) was evaluated in Yola, Adamawa state Nigeria. Laboratory experiments were conducted on cowpea grain by treating them with five different botanical oils (Olive oil, Groundnut oil, Soya bean oil, Khaya ivorensis oil and Neem oil) for the protection of stored cowpea against C. maculatus. Cowpea used for the experiment were subjected to different oil treatments applied at different concentrations (0.5 ml, 1.0 ml, and 1.5 ml ) per 10 grams of cowpea seeds. Randomized Complete Block Design was used and the treatments were replicated three times. Mortality counts were carried out across 24, 48 and 72 hours after treatment as well as oviposition after 14 days of exposure. The result obtained showed that all the botanical oils showed some promising effects on the mortality as well as the oviposition deterrent on adult C. maculatus (especially at 1.0 ml and 1.5 ml) when compared with the control experiment. This study demonstrates that plant oils can play an important role in protecting cowpea from insect’s invasion during storage. Sex as Factor in Salt and Pepper Passage: Updating the Research.

This paper reports a proposal to examine the factor of sex in salt passage. Eighty undergraduates (40 males, 40 females) complete questionnaire with snacks and drinks on hand and a salt shaker and a pepper shaker on the table. They are asked by another male or female who is ostensibly also completing questionnaire, but who is actually a confederate of the experimenter, to pass the salt or pepper. It is anticipated that all participants comply, but would be slower to respond to pepper than to salt and to someone of the same sex compared to someone of the sex opposite. Response times would be slowest when a male asked a male to pass the pepper. Implications for similarity theory and attraction theory are discussed and suggestions are made for the future research.Key words: sex differences, salt and pepper passage.

Parenting (or child rearing) is the process of promoting and supporting the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development of a child from infancy to adulthood. The present study is focussed on the understanding of the parent child relationship of a teenager with his parents when both the parents were working. Moreover parenting has various impact on child development and this is one of the burning issues in today’s society that how to balance between the work place and family life For this purpose, we prepared an open ended/informal and conversational form of interview consisting of 40 dual earners middle class families, the interview is conducted on both parents and the child. Through this interview we found that the working parents seems to devote less time towards their child because of their professional responsibilities and long working hours. As a result the child found the alternative ways to share their feelings such as with their friends and classmates.Key words: Parenting, dual earners, professional responsibilities, long working hours.

Print media coverage of i-league and IPL: a comparative study.

Most popular two sports in India are football and cricket. Two spectacular and highly competitive sports tournament are organized every year in India. For football it is I-League and for cricket it is known as IPL (Indian Premier League). In both tournaments national and international players are participated. Most of the people of India and abroad watched and enjoyed these sports every year. Purpose of the present study was to analyze the print media coverage for these two top most important sports tournament of India. Two most circulated newspapers, one from Bengali and another from English published from Kolkata metropolitan city ware considered for the present study. The print coverage of total days covered for completion of two sports event was considered to collected data. Area of news coverage (ANC) and area of pictorial coverage (APC) were the criterion measure for the present study. Simple geometric scale was used to measure the size of the news coverage. Mean and standard deviation were considered as descriptive statistics and difference between mean was analyzed by t-test. Significance of difference was judged considering only 0.05 level of confidence. All statistical calculations were done using standard statistical software. Result revealed that mean value for ANC and APC coverage was much higher for IPL (1567.29 cm2 & 398.34 cm2) than the mean value of ANC and APC for I-League (394.38 cm2 & 81.16 cm2). Same difference was observed both in Bengali and English news paper also. Result revealed that higher print media coverage in the form of news (ANC) and picture (APC) for IPL (t=15.79) than I-League (t=10.59) was significant statistically (p<0.05). It was concluded that the print media published significantly more news and picture in favour of IPL than I-League which indirectly indicated that cricket was the more popular and publicly accepted sports than football in present India. In the jet-propelled modern world of today, the concepts of home, nationality and identity has suffered a setback. The concepts of multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-racial affiliation has created new tropes of existence beyond the 'national', 'immigrant'' or borderland conception. The writers, who have the experience of living in a land where he or she finds himself or herself different from the majority, suffer identity crisis and consider their rootless existence as a kind of exile. Such kind of fragmented existences are quite common in diasporic works and partition novels. Research on advanced biological effluent treatment: a review.

Effluent treatment can be carried out by various biological, physical and chemical methods. Physical treatment techniques are used for removal of coarser materials from the water followed by biological and chemical treatments. Removal of many organic matters is generally carried out by biological methods. Biological treatment can be either attached growth or suspended growth. The selection of biological treatment depends on quality of effluent and the percentage removal required. Biological treatments are also used for selective removal of many heavy metals, phosphorous and other pollutants. The current review summarizes the research and advancements in biological treatments. The industrialization in inevitable for meeting the demand of rapid urbanization and increased living standard. The undesirable side effect of this industrial growth is water pollution. Many industries discharge effluents with high pollutant loading. Membrane separation methods give the product with uniform quality. Reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, microfiltration and nanofiltration are few important membrane separation methods. Many modifications in these processes are also tried by various investigators to overcome the disadvantages. The existence of mangrove forests is jeopardized by the increase in population pressure, agricultural, industrial and urban development, climate change and weak forest management capacity that negatively affected the status of mangroves worldwide. The present review paper provides information on the status of mangrove forests in Zanzibar Island, to inform managers and decision makers on their management and sustainable use of its resources. The extent and distribution of mangrove ecosystem indicates that the mangrove growing stock of the main Islands of Unguja has declined drastically when compared to that of Pemba. Changes in mangrove composition were driven by a combination of rise in sea level, environmental changes and anthropogenic interaction. This review argues for the importance of regular climate change monitoring, mangrove eco-physiological studies and genetic materials which are crucial in providing a basis for the ecological restoration and management of mangrove ecosystem.
