The article aims to indicate elements to support a present analysis of China-United States strategic interaction involving the Taiwan issue. Thus, the study analyses four cases that could be considered turning points in the interaction between the countries in order to draw long-term patterns which will help in the study of the current situation: the Korean War, the First and Second Strait Crises, the Sino-US rapprochement and the Third Strait Crisis. Afterwards, it summarizes the observed patterns and list the recent developments in the strategic layout between China and the United States. The conclusion points out the proliferation of elements that strengthen the logic of preemption in East Asia, especially regarding Taiwan, but also that there are alternative proposals, such as the Offshore Control.
