Introduction: In 2001, WHO declared global leprosy elimination was attained globally. The decline in the registered leprosy prevalence was almost 90% and new case detection was about 50% over the last two decades. Hooghly district of West Bengal, India is a low endemic area for Leprosy. Analysis of district level leprosy data was done to study the burden, pattern and profile of leprosy cases in urban area of Hooghly district. Material and Methods: Data was collected on demographic characteristics and various indicators of National Leprosy Eradication Programme. Calculation was done as annual prevalence rate, annual new case detection rate, proportion of child cases, proportion of visible deformity and proportion of multi-bacillary patients, was calculated from 2003-2004 to 2008-2009. Geographical distribution of cases was done within the district. Data was analysed by using Epi info. Results: Out of 5, 041, 97 6 population of Hooghly district, 66.5% was rural population and 33.5% urban population. The prevalence of Leprosy was 2.83/10,000 population in 2003-04 as against 0.70/10,000 population in 2008-09. The Annual new case detection rate was 1.6 per 10,000 population in 2003-04 as against 0.96 per 10,000 population in 2008-09. Overall Child case rate was 10% of the total newly detected cases. Discussion and Conclusion: More than 80% of leprosy cases in urban area are of multibacillary type and more than 50% discontinuation rate is found in the Corporation and municipal areas. The municipal and urban areas are showing more drop outs as compared to the rural areas. Most of the urban areas are showing more than ten percent of the child case rate denoting a high rate of transmission of the infection.

Pulmonary tuberculosis with multi-drug resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a major cause of concern in the developing countries. The present study was carried out to study the prevalence of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in clinical isolates at Sir Sunderlal hospital in Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India, which is a tertiary care hospital. One hundred and eighty nine (189) sputum samples were collected from clinically suspected cases of tuberculosis and subjected to Zeihl-Neelsen stains (ZN) and culture on Lowenstein-Jensen (LJ) medium and 46 cultural isolates were obtained and subjected to drug susceptibility against Isoniazid (INH) and Rifampicin (RIF). A total of nine (19.5%) isolates were found to be resistant against INH and two strains (4.5%) was found to be resistant against both RIF and INH. No strain was found to be resistant against Rifampicin alone. The present study revealed the presence of 4-6% of multi-drug resistant M. tuberculosis infection in patients attending Sir Sunderlal hospital in Banaras Hindu University. This emphasizes the need for strengthening laboratory services for timely diagnosis of MDR TB.

India lies on the cusp of a demographic transition. It is essential to all-round development of the youths of India. Recent times have witnessed an increase in substance use among younger population. In India forty percent of men use tobacco in some form and One-fifth of young men aged 15-24 consume alcohol. It is estimated that 7.6 million people worldwide died of substance abuse related causes. To find out the association of socio-demographic variables on the problem of substance abuse among male youth students a cross-sectional school based study was conducted from March 2013 to July 2015. By multistage random sampling 570 male youth students aged 15 to 24 years belonged to class 9th to graduates of all the schools and colleges of Chiraigaon Community Development Block was selected. Out of them 27 and 3 students were excluded from study due to unreliability of information and denial of consent. Finally 540 students were interviewed and thus obtained data was entered and analyzed by SPSS. Substance users were more in 20-24 yrs of age group belonging to general caste and having higher level of education. In upper class substance users was less as compared to non-users. Likelihood of Substance use was high among those whose fathers were skilled worker (35.7%) or doing some business (18.8%) and having extremes of education.
