Based on the analysis of Medieval Moldavian and Rumanian sources and works, the Old-Rus’ population of the Carpatho-Dniestrovian region, the Rusins and the area of their settlement before the beginning of Vlach colonization, is analyzed in the article. This is confirmed by given toponyms and anthroponyms. In fact, many of them derive from the root „rus”. The contribution of the Rusins to the formation of the Moldavian ethnos and statehood is underlined.

The article considers the byway to date problem with the features of the Christianization of the Carpathian Rus in the context of missionary practice of the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium), the Roman Curia and the First Bulgarian Empire. Chronological framework focused on the end of the ninth - the beginning of the eleventh century, An era when the Central and Eastern Europe, including - land of Kievan Rus became the object of missionary activity on the part of the Byzantine and «ecumenical orthodoxy» and Latin «apostolic mission» organized by the papacy. Archpriest Kassian Bohatyrets - researcher of church history in Bukovinian Rus’

The article is dedicated to the memory of the well-known social, political and church figure, Archpriest Kassian Bohatyrets, one of the leaders of the Old- Rusin party in Austrian Bukovina. During the Second Political Trial of Vienna in 1916 he was sentenced to death for his conviction. In the last years of his life Father Kassian compiled a history of the Orthodox Church in Bukovina «The History of the Bukovinian Diocese from the Earliest Times to 1943». This history also included the history of the land. Describing the period of Austrian dominance Father Kassian also gives note to the socio-political situation and the persecution of the patriots of Holy Rus’ by the Austrian authorities. He sheds light on the church-religious life in Bukovina during WWI, the oppression by the Austrian authorities of the Orthodox clergy for their sympathy towards Russia.

An Anonymous Hungarian account about «the boundary of the Ruthenians» during the «founding of the Magyar homeland» in the Inner Danubian Lands

In the knight’s novel «the Acts of the Hungarians», written in the early XII century unknown notar of Hungarian king Bela III, mentioned «Ruthenian abroad» (confinium Ruthenorum), allegedly held in the basin of the Upper Tisza. Here, according to the Hungarian Anonymous, Bulgarian rulers was placed part of the Balkan Slavs. Because the ownership of the Kievan Rus and the First Bulgarian Kingdom never stretched so far, most likely, Anonymous meant the South-Western border of the area of settlement of the Eastern Slavs. The occurrence of the old Russian state and the desire of Kiev princes conquer his power all ethnic communities of the Eastern Slavs could encourage the Bulgarian Tsar Simeon create a barrier against the Russians on the Northern borders of their possessions, but hardly Balkan immigrants lived so far away from the lower stream of the Danube.

The article states that described in the Old Russian «Legend briefly of Moldovan ruler» events occurred in the first half of the fourteenth century, during the reign of two Hungarian Kings of Angevin dynasty – Charles Robert and Louis. Both of them appear under the name of Vladislav to its established tradition in medieval Hungary to use the image of St. Vladislav as a universal sacred symbol of royal power. Described in the first part of the «Legends ...» of the victory over the Tatars may be related to the actual events of 1324 – the suppression of the rebellion of Transylvanian Saxons, supported by the Tatars, followed by the relocation of the Orthodox Vlachs Wallachia in Maramarosh. The results of the 2004 Census of Moldova and the statistics of the State Enterprise «Centre for State Information Resources "Registru"» are compared in the article. According to the statistics of the State Enterprise «Centre for State Information Resources "Registru"» the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, who declared Russian as their mother tongue are much higher then the results of the Census and much lower than those who call themselves Rumanians and their mother tongue as Rumanian. All personal statistics, including those which regard nationality and mother tongue are documented by the citizen himself and then verified.

In the beginning Moldavia was a multi-ethnic state. Along with the two basic ethnic groups, Moldavian and Rusin, Medieval Moldavia was comprised of Bulgarians, Armenians, Poles, Jews and others. Many place names are of non- Moldavian origin (Rusin, South Slavic, Tartar, Great Russian, Little Russian, etc.). Several of them are ethnotoponymic. Anthroponymic names also demonstrate the multinational composition of Moldavia. The Rusin-Vlach (Moldavian) synthesis led to many borrowings from Rusin material and spiritual culture. Many of the inhabitants of Moldavia, in the early centuries of its existence, were bilingual. Up to the 18th Century the Rusin (Western Rus’) language was the official language of the Moldavian Princedom. Many of the minority groups blended into the Moldavian culture. Moldovanization continues today.

Ethno-Demographic processes in Bessarabia in the 19th - beginning of the 20th ages

In the article information is cited about the ethnic composition of the population of Bessarabia, their numbers, the history of the appearance of the ethnic groups in the given territory. The cohabitation of the various ethnic groups in Bessarabia, as part of the Russian Empire, promoted not only the mutual enrichment of cultures but also led to the formation of a particular polyethnic commonality - the Bessarabians, distinguished by a high degree of passiveness, «imperial» consciousness and mentality, distinguishable from the Rumanian although Rumanians are closely related to the Moldavians in an ethno-cultural sense. This commonality clearly showed itself during the years of the Revolution, Civil War, Rumanian Occupation and WWII. During that period of time, the ethnic groups in Bessarabia could preserve their own ethno-cultural identity. It was here that the Orthodox Turkic-speaking immigrants from beyond the Danube could form into an independent ethnos - the Gagauz.
