Assessing The Relationship Between Clinical Characteristics and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Comorbidity and Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms in Patients With Schizophrenia

Aim: There is a high prevalence of obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) comorbidity in patients with schizophrenia. Previous studies investigating the OCS/OCD comorbidity in schizophrenia have obtained conflicting results. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between OCS/OCD comorbidity, and sociodemographic variables and clinical symptoms in patients with schizophrenia. Materials and Methods: Two-hundred and eighty patients with schizophrenia who were admitted to the Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic of Dışkapı Training and Research Hospital were included into the study. Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS), Positive and Negative Symptoms Rating Scale (SAPS-SANS), Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia (CDSS) and Yale Brown Obsessive Compulsion Scale (YBOCS) were applied to all individuals. Sociodemographic variables and clinical characteristics of patients without OCD, and manifesting subthreshold OCS were compared seperately with characteristics of those with OCD comorbidity. Descriptive tests and Pearson correlation analysis were used for statistical analysis. Results: OCD comorbidity was associated with higher SANS, SAPS, and BPRS scores in this study (p <0.05). Additionally, IGD scores were lower and CDRS scores were higher in the patients with OCD compared to those without OCD (p <0.05). Severity of the negative and depressive symptoms in patients with subthreshold OCS did not show a significant difference from those with OCD comorbidity (p> 0.05). Conclusion: The patients with comorbid OCD presented different clinical features and more severe psychotic symptoms compared to those without OCD. In addition, OCD comorbidity was associated with lower functionality, and more severe depressive symptoms in this study. However, there was no significant difference between those with OCS, and OCD in severity of negative and depressive symptoms. Prospective studies are needed to assess the impact of OCS and OCD on clinical features of schizophrenia.

The Relationship between Gastrointestinal Symptoms and Pain Characteristic and Disability in Individuals with Migraine

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between gastrointestinal system (GIS) symptoms and pain characteristics, disability in patients with migraine. Material and Methods: Forty-five migraine patients were included in the study. GIS symptoms with Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS), pain characteristic with pain intensity in the last 3 months determined by Visual Analogue Scale and frequency of attacks with pain, migraine-related disability status with Migraine Disability Assessment Scale (MIDAS) were evaluated in patients with migraine. Results: As a result of this study, a moderate positive correlation with the frequency of attacks of migraine subjects and GSRS-total score (p <0.001; rho: 0.449), a positive moderate correlation with GSDS-reflux score (p: 0.004; rho: 0.424), a positive and low to moderate correlation between the indigestion score (p: 0.007; 0.394), a positive low to moderate correlation with the GSRS-constipation score (p: 0.007; 0.399) The MIDAS score of the individuals with migraine showed a positive correlation with GSRS-total score (p: 0.005; rho: 0.410), and a positive relationship with GSRS-constipation score (p<0.001; rho: 0.541). MIDAS score did not correlate with GSRS-abdominal pain, GSRS-reflux, GSRS-diarrhea, and SRS-indigestion scores (p>0.05). There was no correlation between pain severity of migraine subjects and any parameter of GSRS score. (p>0.05). Conclusion: In our study, a positive correlation was found between GIS symptoms and frequency of attacks and disability in patients with migraine. Considering the relationship between gastrointestinal symptoms and migraine may facilitate and shorten the diagnosis of migraine and may also contribute to migraine treatment.

Evaluation of the Relationship Between Schneiderian Membrane Thickness and Sinus Floor Cortication Using Cone Beam Computed Tomography

Aim: In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between sinus floor cortication (SFC) and Schneiderian membrane thickness (SMT) through cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. Materials and Methods: A total of 292 maxillary sinuses of 146 patients (61 males, 85 females) who underwent a CBCT scan for dental implant treatment were evaluated. SFC was classified as follows: type-1: sinus floor exhibiting similar or higher density than the surrounding cortical areas, type-2: sinus floor exhibiting lower density than the surrounding cortical areas, type-3: sinus floor exhibiting no cortical bone, and type-4: sinus floor exhibiting fusion of sinus floor bone and native crestal bone. We also investigated the relationship between the SFC types and SMTs measured from the highest border of the membrane to the sinus floor on cross-sectional images. Results: Type-1, type-2, type-3, and type-4 SFC were seen in 114, 102, 48, and 28 cases, respectively. The Schneiderian membrane was found to be thinner in type-1 SFC than in type-2 SFC. No significant difference was found between type-3 and type-4 SFC in terms of SMT. Discussion and Conclusion: Evaluation of SFC and SMT using CBCT can provide information about implant stability and survival in treatment after sinus grafting. Although type-1 SFC is favorable for implant placement, it may also be associated with an increased risk of membrane perforation.
