The medical and social thought in Brazil was combined with the development
of the country’s history. It is in the framework of reflection about the past that doctors diag-
nosed the national ills and predicted solutions for the design of the national State. Charge
of his new assignment, the doctor would be a new social subject to the Nation: a “doctor
politics”, a mixture of physician and social scientist, concerned about the weakness of society,
supposedly originated from population, supported by institutions committed to order and
progress. This paper aims to present how Social Medicine, through the medical-political, was
invited by the state to intervene in a context with the objectives of form a national develop-
ment project. So, analyze the development of medicine as a social thought, beyond analysis
of reality, seeking to prevent and cure the ills of the nation, forming the first characteristics
of the Brazilian Social Sciences.
