The orthographic reforms of 1907 and 1911 were implemented in Brazil and Portugal in a republican’s context. We defend that the decision for a specific national orthographic rule was taken following political goals connected with the desire to strengthen the national state. The orthographic reforms legitimized the creation of a ´mother language` or ´Portuguese language` as an operation of neglecting the possibility of a ´Brazilian language` based in a more ´popular` pronunciation because the orthography was taken as a ´mirror of the nation`. This study intends to explore the political and social dimensions of the language, out of a ´Olympus of the letters`. We intend to discuss the usual negative evaluations on the pre-modern literature, searching for a better understanding of the political implications of the debate on the language at the beginning of XXth century. We are interested in the social logic of the letters production and their connections with mechanisms of social distinction.

In the Nineteenth-century Brazil, the Princesses Elizabeth and Leopoldina became the only heir to the Throne and Crown of Brazil. This study aimed to analyze the formation of the Princesses by highlighting the figure of the Emperor D. Pedro II, the girls' father. This historical and documentary research had the Princesses letters as the main source of it. It was concluded the Princesses were educated with disciplines aimed at the "arts and sciences and the "housewives". They were of great importance to the tutor’s performance and in the role of Emperor’s governess, this last one as a true parent / teacher engaged in turning their daughters into future sovereign.

The aim of this work is to provide an account concerning the insertion of environment-related themes in a Drafting course along with knowledge borrowed from the field of Art. The resources employed consist of photographs and graffiti. The theme Urban Environment served as a basis for the project and the theoretical references may be found not only in the National Curricular Parameters guidelines but also in the works of authors who approach Environmental Education on a critical basis.

Relying on a theoretical-methodological approach, which emphasises the connectivity between teaching and research at the crossroads of History and Education discourses, the Laboratory of Humanities of Colégio Pedro II in Niteroi is the subject of this study. It draws up an analysis of interdisciplinary didactic and pedagogical innovations toward the meaningful learning process according to Marco Antonio Moreira (2000),which focused the criticism of students in the basic education. In addition to that, the importance of sounds and images registers as the sources and objects of History Teaching is highlighted.

During the period known as Discoveries and Renaissance, European cartography increases its production, intending to develop and disseminate knowledge about the lands recently found. Various geographic characters, animals, vegetation and people featured the world that conquerors and explorers turned wider to the inhabitants of the Old Continent. Making efforts to cover and introduce all the new territories and human groups in their science and domain, Europeans initiate the production of atlases. Searching the totalization, this type of cartographic work combines Geography and History and appeared at the late XVI century. Owing to the peculiarities of their construction, which put together picture and texts, and to their social and political meanings, the atlases are interesting sources to study culture at Modern Age.

According to the program set by the Department of History of Colégio Pedro II, the article reports a research accomplished with students of the 8th year of elementary school of Campus Centro based on the following themes: the independence of Portuguese America and Brazil Empire. In the long-term still so dear to the historian's craft, the main objective was to boost the teaching-learning process about such themes on the spot by focusing the bonds linking history, memory and heritage.
