Comparative evaluation of the apical sealing ability among different root canal obturation techniques and endodontic sealers by using fluid filtration method: A systematic review

Introduction: The target of many experimental studies was to appraise the sealing ability of the root canal filling materials. No systematic reviews are available to appraise such condition. The aim of current review is to appraise the sealing ability of different root canal obturation techniques and sealers using fluid filtration method. Materials and Methods: Two automated databases (Google Scholar and PubMed using English-language literature) were used for this systematic review, using specific keywords together with inclusion & exclusion standards. In December 2018, such investigation was carried out & in March 2019, it was updated. Results: Search detected twelve studies that achieved the present inclusion and exclusion criteria. These studies illustrated different aspects of apical sealing, including: sealing ability, obturation techniques, sealer types, and updating studies in fluid filtration evaluation method. Conclusions: AH Plus had the best sealing ability over all sealers with different obturation techniques when evaluated by fluid filtration device and more investigations should be performed regarding that.

Knowledge, attitude and practice of undergraduate medical students in Madurai regarding oral health: A cross sectional survey

Introduction: Proper Knowledge of oral diseases is crucial in medical practice due to the following reasons, periodontal diseases are associated with multiple systemic conditions of medical interest, a large number of systemic diseases have oral manifestations, and many drugs are associated with oral adverse drug reactions and majority of the population approach medical practitioners for their oral health problems.1 Aim: To assess Knowledge, Attitude and Practice among Undergraduate Medical Students of Madurai regarding Oral Health. Materials and Methods: 313 subjects took part in the questionnaire survey. A descriptive cross sectional survey was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire, in English language containing 22 close ended questions. The questions are related to awareness about oral hygiene practices including brushing technique, brushing time, importance given to oral screening & referral of patients with dental problem to dentists and regarding the intellect of medical students about premalignant lesions/conditions, awareness of risk factors and prevention of oral diseases. Test-retest reliability revealed an accepted value of Cronback’s alpha >0.6. The results were analyzed by descriptive statistics and Chi square test using SPSS version 22. Result: 64.89% of final year students, 65.21% of third year students and 60.61% of second year students had responded correctly to oral health knowledge, attitude and practice based questions. Conclusion: Oral health awareness among undergraduate medical students was found to be satisfactory. Educational curriculum requires more extensive oral health programs.

Primary failure of eruption in permanent first molar treated surgically - A case report

Primary failure of eruption (PFE) is a cessation of tooth eruption before emergence, despite the presence of clear eruption pathway. It is a rare disease with a prevalence of 0.06%. However, Decker et al showed that the genetic mutation in PTH1R gene is associated with primary failure of eruption. This case report is about a nine years old female patient who reported to the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Islamabad, with primary failure of eruption of right mandibular 1st permanent molar which was incidentally found on OPG, with a completely erupted left 1st permanent molar. Treatment commenced after one year of patient’s initial presentation with no progress in eruption. The affected tooth was marsupalized completely including the removal of the dental sac and coronal bone. After the follow up period of 4 months tooth eruption was evident. Further follow up of 8months revealed complete tooth eruption.

The effect of a tongue on lower anterior alveolar trough- A clinical case report

Introduction: The purpose of these case reports was to evaluate the thickness of the lower anterior alveolar trough in patients with tongue thrusting habit. Materials and Methods: Lateral cephalogram and CBCT was evaluated in these patients. Result: Both lateral cephalogram and CBCT confirmed reduced thickness of anterior trough in patients with tongue thrust habit. Conclusion: Depending on the thickness of the alveolar bone, the extend of lower incisor retraction could be evaluated.
