This article is essential to study the biographies of the most prominent and active members of society – scientific, social, political and military figures. The popularity of this topic is analyzed on the example of modern Ukrainian historical edition «Sumy Historical and Archival Journal», published in Sumy State University since 2005. During this period, were published 80 materials relating to biographical studies. This amounted to 28 % of the total number of publications in the «Sumy Historical and Archival Journal». The author has identified several thematic groups of works of a biographical nature.
