The article is devoted to the analysis of modern academic discourse images of Europe. Based on discursive-constructivist approach author stresses attention on how contradictions between images of an «old» Europe and a «new» Europe reflect the problems in the «European identity» conceptualization. Author highlights danger of reification of European identity, provides critical analysis of the violent opposition of historically formed identity of «old» Europe and the identity of the «new» Europe as an institutional development project of the European Union.

Article dwells upon some aspects of the modern Ukrainian values, including religion and religiosity in the system of values and life priorities. Author describes the relationship between respondents’ religious self-identification and some of their values and philosophical positions. It is concluded that the primary value in contemporary Ukrainian society, regardless of religious self-identification, is family. Having faith (based on the self-identification as a believer) is a kind of internal moral and ethical code. According to empirical indicators of people who consider themselves believers, they are more responsible towards institute of family. Individuals with certain religious beliefs, compared to non-believers, are more negative towards such social issues as bribery, prostitution, homosexuality, drug addiction and have higher moral expectations for their life value and own behaviour.

The paper evaluates social capital, particularly, trust, civic participation and communication in informal social networks as factors that may contribute to the modernization in Ukraine. Studies on the relationship between social capital and socio- economic development were reviewed. Using structural equation modeling, a model of the social capital as a resource of institutional effectiveness was developed based on the European Social Survey for Ukraine. It is proved that in Ukrainian society the problem is not the absence or deficiency of social capital, but the weakness of its civic impact.

The simulation and peripheral nature of the Ukrainian development model is demonstrated. The attitudes of the Ukrainian population to this model are explored.

Based on a modernization model by R. Inglehart and C. Welzel the factors and value determinants of active civic engagement in Ukraine are identified and compared to selected European countries. Using data from the third (1999–2001), and the fourth (2008–2010) waves of the European Values Study (EVS) as well as the fifth wave (2005–2007) of the World Values Survey (WVS), the political, civic and social types of participation are studied as elements of active civic engagement. Comparative analysis includes four European societies with different development paths, namely Ukraine, Germany, Russia and Poland. It is argued in the article that the active position of social agents and their inclusion in social life determine success of modernization. Since according to the model by R. Inglehart and C. Welzel, value change is the key part of the modernization process, study of the emancipative values influence on active civic engagement can clarify development prospects of Ukrainian society. The findings of the research indicate that emancipative values are a determinants of active position in Ukrainian political sphere, although they do not have significant influence on civic and social participation. Low rates of activity in civic and social spheres induce insufficient level of solidarity, trust and self-government in Ukraine. On the way of building competitive economy and effective institutions it is necessary to stimulate development of NGOs, community integration, volunteering and mutual help behavior. Practical recommendations for public authorities are proposed in order to optimize this process by raising the level of solidarity, trust and self-government in society.

The article discusses the theoretical issues of the system and culture of the socio-historical memory, which are considered as its shape and quality. Author analyzes the components of the system of socio-historical memory, such as content, objects and subjects of the social-historical memory, institutional compositions for the preservation of the socio-historical memory, social relations relating to the socio-historical memory. Qualitative parameters of the socio-historical memory are determined: mnemologic culture, status, nature of mnemologic attitudes and values. Operationalization of the mnemologic culture and the state of socio-historical memory is suggested.

The paper presents a review of the main approaches in social capital conceptualization and measurement, as well as examines the legitimacy of the aggregated usage of trust, civic participation and informal communication as a measure of social capital. The analysis is based on “European Social Survey” (ESS-2010) in five contexts: Ukraine, Russia, post-communist countries – new EU member states, countries of EU-12 and Scandinavia. Confirmatory factor analysis is implemented. Results suggest that traditional components of social capital are more likely to be separate parts and should be analyzed distinctly.
