PREVALÊNCIA DE OBESIDADE EM CRIANÇAS E ADOLESCENTES DO ENSINO FUNDAMENTAL NUMA CIDADE DO INTERIOR DE MINAS GERAIS

Introduction: The family history of diabetes, obesity and increased abdominal fat are strong risk factors for metabolic syndrome since childhood. Objective: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents, frequent public in elementary schools in a county in the state of Minas Gerais. Materials and Methods: We collected weight, height, age and sex of 257 children. A descriptive analysis was done using Epi Info 3.5.2 for classification, whose anthropometric variables are: Weight per Age, Height per Age, children's BMI per age for both age groups. Results: Among children younger than 10 years, 2.16% had severe thinness, leanness 3.24%, 76.3% normal weight, 9.72% risk of overweight, overweight 6.4%, 3.7% obesity. Among adolescents, none had obesity, sharp thinness 2.4%, 4.8% underweight, normal weight 78%, 7.3% risk of overweight, 7.3% overweight. Regarding gender, the highest prevalence of overweight and obesity according to BMI / age where for males in which represented 11% of the population, as in females resulted in 7%, this result can also be observed for the risk of overweight. Discussion: This study found a prevalence of overweight and obesity 6.4% and 3.7% respectively, close to most studies. Conclusion: This study indicates the need for an intervention program in early life, to prevent metabolic complications due to obesity.
