Resin bonded bridges can be highly effective in replacing missing teeth, restoring oral function and aesthetics and result in high levels of patient satisfaction. They represent a minimally invasive, cost effective and long lasting treatment modality given thorough patient assessment and the use of careful clinical techniques. Maryland bridges should be considered more frequently as the restoration of choice for short spans. Maryland bridges are resin bonded bridge using electrolytic etching of metal to retain the metal framework. Thompson and Livaditis in 1983 developed a technique of electrolytic etching of Ni-Cr and Co-Cr alloy. Etched cast retainers have definite advantage over cast perforated restorations. Retention is improved as resin to etched metal bond is substantially stronger than resin to etched enamel. In one study it was found that an electrochemically etched surface was approximately 2.9 times as retentive as a perforated one. Retainers are thinner and non-perforated. Oral surface of cast retainers is highly polished and resists plaque accumulation. Whole surface area of retainer is retentive adding to retention. But etch is alloy specific requiring special apparatus. Only non-precious alloy which can be etched is used. Precious alloys cannot be etched. Micromechanical retention in noble alloys is achieved by electrolytic tin plating. Other means of micromechanical etching is Grit blasting using 50 – 250 µm Aluminium Oxide. Chemical etching can be achieved by Hydrofluoric Acid gel (Livaditis 1986) and Aqua Regia Gel.

Periodontal disease is multifactorial in nature. To meet long lasting therapeutic end points in treatment of it, a solid understanding of the etiology of periodontitis is need of an hour. Current research has shifted its focus from periodontitis being polybacterial infection to involvement of various viruses in the etiopathogeny of destructive periodontal disease. Discovery of the high copy counts of Epstein–Barr virus and cytomegalovirus in aggressive and chronic periodontitis, it is unlikely that these pathogenic viruses are acting merely as innocuous bystanders in pathogenesis of the periodontal diseases. These viruses probably might not act as primary periodontopathic agents but they might cooperate the specific bacteria in periodontal disease progression. The periodontal research delving more into role of virus as a causative agent for periodontal diseases can open up a whole new era in therapeutic approaches and prove to be a paradigm shift. Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate different procedures to check for the most effective and most dimensionally accurate disinfection method for acrylic dentures. Material and Method: Forty five edentulous patients wearing dentures were divided into three categories: Group I included disinfection with conventional microwave at 650 W for 3 mins twice a week, Group II disinfected their dentures by immersing in 0.2% clorhexidine gluconate solution for 30 mins twice a week and Group III used 100% White vinegar solution for immersion for 30 mins twice a week. The inter-molar distance, inter canine distance; the anterio-posteriro distance and the depth of the cast were measured with Digital Vernier calipers. Result: Group III showed highest decline in number of bacterial colonies after 60 days followed by Group I. Least decline was seen in II. Highest dimensional changes was seen in Group I followed by Group II dentures. Conclusion: Within the limitations of the study, it was concluded that all the three methods were effective for disinfection of denture while immersion in White vinegar was most dimensionally stable.

Introduction: Role of forensic odontologists is very important in identification of individuals in medico-legal cases and mass disaster calamities. Mandibular canine index, rugoscopy and cheiloscopy can play an important part in individual identification. This study was carried out to evaluate the significance of mandibular canine index, Rugoscopy and Cheiloscopy in sex determination. Materials and Methods: A cross sectional study was carried out on 300 subjects, out of which 150 males and 150 females were selected from patients reporting the department of Oral Medicine and Radiology. Impressions of maxillary and mandibular arches were taken. The width of the canine and the intercanine distance were measured with digital vernier calipers, patterns of rugae were noted and impressions of lip prints were taken using lip color from every person. Results: Mandibular canine index, Rugoscopy and different lip print patterns showed statistical significance in evaluating sex of a particular person. Conclusion: This study showed that all three methods are reliable for sex determination. However, according to our study cheiloscopy was the better predictor of sex than the mandibular canine indices and palatal rugoscopy. It can be considered as a fairly predictable tool for sex determination in forensic odontology.

Aim: No published data describes the dental implant and endodontic practice profile of general dental practitioners in Palestine. The main aim of the present study was to assess the practice profile of general dental practitioners in Palestine & their attitude towards endodontics and implants. Methods: A survey of a sample of practicing dentists in Palestine who attended the 4th Palestinian Implantology conference was conducted with a 20 question questionnaire. Results: 123 participants were general dentists with several years of experience in clinical practice. The Z-test revealed no significant difference between root canal treatments completed by survey respondents presently and 3 years before. The more information dentists obtain from peer reviewed journals, the less likely they were to answer the prognosis of root canal treatment of a necrotic pulp was the same or better than implant therapy, which was statistically significant (p value 0.045). Conclusion: Appropriate treatment must be based with the patient’s best interests and long-term quality of life. In view of the increased clinical acceptance and patient demand for dental implants, there is an associated need to provide further education in this field for both general dental practitioners and undergraduate and postgraduate dental students

Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of dentist educating school children and school teacher educating school children in improving knowledge, attitude and behaviour of school children. Materials and methods: Six schools were selected and were divided into 2 government school, 2 aided school and 2 un-aided school. Each school was selected for dentist to provide oral health education another school was selected for school teacher to provide oral health education. At the baseline knowledge, attitude and behaviour of school children was assessed by questionnaire. Followed by oral health education by dentist to school children and school teacher, followed by school teacher educating school children. After 3 months the knowledge, attitude and behaviour questionnaire was re-assessed using same questionnaire. Results: Dentist educating school children showed statistically significant improvement in the knowledge, attitude and behaviour of school children in all the 3 school. Whereas, school teacher group showed statistically significant improvement in only unaided school. Government school and aided school showed significant improvement in knowledge score only. Conclusion: Dentist are effective in improving knowledge, attitude and behaviour of school children of all the 3 school. Whereas school teacher are effective in improving knowledge, attitude and behaviour of school children of un- aided school.

Background & Objective: Menopause leads to physiological changes that take place due to decreased production of estrogen by ovary in women. The study was carried out to know the effect of menopause on saliva by evaluating the salivary flow rate and pH of stimulated saliva and to assess relation among oral diseases and the regularly menstruating women and post-menopausal women. Method: The study was conducted on 40 healthy post-menopausal women and pre-menopausal women (controls) respectively, who attended private clinic. Data were collected through a questionnaire and oral examination. Samples of the saliva from control group were collected within the first 3 days of menstruation. A standard size paraffin wax was chewed by participants. The salivary secretion during the first one min was swallowed; and next five minute secretion was spat into graduated test tubes. Electrometrically, digital pH meter (Model me 962-P) and pH electrode was used to measure salivary pH and salivary flow rate was measured as ml/min. Results: A notable decrease in the salivary pH and salivary flow rate, which could be credited to the high values of DMFT and OHI-S in both groups. Our study also shows significant difference in physiological changes and DMFT, OHI-S, PI and GI score in premenopausal women and postmenopausal women. Interpretation & Conclusion: Our result reveals that there is a distinct decrease in the salivary pH and flow rate in postmenopausal women which gives route to poor oral hygiene and more susceptibility to oral physiological changes. Therefore, with aging in females, substance of preventive dentistry increases.

Background: Decreased physical activity, sedentary lifestyle, changes in food habits have led to significant rise in the number of obese children. With an increase in number of children preferring fast food products over a balanced diet, the condition has become more prevalent. Food items such as soft drinks, refined breads are generally of low nutritive quality but have high cariogenic potential. Aim: To determine a correlation between the caries status and Body Mass Index (BMI) in school children aged 6-10 years in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Settings and Design: A total of 468 children were examined from 4 primary schools which were selected by simple random sampling method. Materials & Method: Prior to the dental and medical examination, informed consents were obtained from the parent’s/ guardian’s of the children. Dental caries was assessed using df-t and DF-T index. The height of the children was measured by a stadiometer and weight was measured by a portable digital weighing machine. BMI was classified according to World Health organization classification. Statistical Analysis used: Student t-test and Chi-square test were used and all statistical tests were conducted using IBM SPSS software (ver.20.0; IBM, Chicago, IL, USA). Results: 79.4% children were in normal range, 7.6% in underweight, 10.20% and 2.8% in overweight and obese range respectively. Caries free dentition was found in 52% of underweight children, 47.4% in normal weight children, 41.6% and 38.5% in overweight and obese children respectively. Mean df-t/DF-T score of the study population was 2.32. Conclusion: The present study showed a significant correlation between caries status and obesity, and it forces the challenge that is forced on preventive public health programs for more focus towards nutrition and physical activity.

Odontogenic neoplasms encompass a group of lesions with a varied clinical picture and biological behavior ranging from indolent hamartomatous proliferation to locally aggressive benign tumors and their very aggressive malignant counterparts. The benign neoplasms are normally slow growing, indolent with no invasive potential. However, there exists a few locally aggressive benign odontogenic tumors that have a tendency to invade and deform the surrounding structures. The exact reason for the aggressiveness of these benign neoplasms remained an enigma until recently but with the ongoing research and the tremendous progress in the molecular biology of tumors, great strides have now been made in our understanding of their molecular pathogenesis. Their biology and clinical expression can often be destructive and ominous. An appropriate treatment protocol needs to be followed to combat the high recurrence rate and aggressiveness of these entities. This review aims to give an understanding of the locally aggressive benign odontogenic neoplasms, their biologic behaviour and the therapy strategies employed to treat them.

Dental fluorosis is a known adverse effect of fluoride overuse. Enamel or dental fluorosis is a condition caused by 'excessive' intake of fluoride over an extended period of time. The most common symptom of dental fluorosis is a chalk-like discoloration of teeth with white spots or lines on tooth enamel. In more severe cases the affected areas have a yellow or brown discoloration. In extreme forms, fluorosis may result in a pitted tooth surface. Fluorosis has been reported way back in 1901. The treatment options for fluorosis are varied depending upon individual cases. The purpose of this article is to report various treatment options available for dental fluorosis; it also dwells on the need for the dentists to be aware of their local indigenous pathologies to treat it in a better manner.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the finishing efficacy of different finishing instruments on GC Fuji GIC-IXGP. The finishing instrument used were mylar strip, super snap finishing disc, fine grit diamond finishing bur and cabide bur. The results showed that the surface which was set against mylar strip and left undisturbed without resorting to any finishing, has the smoothest appearance and that any finishing procedure results in disruption of the surface smoothness of the glass ionomer restoration.

The purpose of this in vitro study was to measure the initial pH and buffering capacity of some commonly consumed flavoured drinks in India and to determine their erosive potential. Commercially available five drinks were taken (Pepsi, Appy fizz, Apple juice, Gatorade & a milk based drink). Their initial pH were measured with pH meter and their buffering capacities were measured by adding 1M NaOH in the increments of 0.2 ml into 100 ml of each drink till the pH reached 5.5 and 7 respectively. Total titratable acidity measurement shows that among all the drinks, there was a significant difference between the sports drink and the milk based drink. In conclusion it was found that sports drink had the most buffering capacity with maximum erosive potential whereas milk based drink had the least.

Introduction: Orthodontic mini-implants can release metal ions into the saliva. NiTi orthodontic mini-implants from different manufacturers would have different corrosion resistance. Fluoridated mouthwashes are often recommended to orthodontic patients to reduce the risk of white-spot lesions around their mini-implants. We assayed the corrosion resistance, in terms of ion release, of different NiTi orthodontic mini-implants in different mouthwashes. The purpose of this study is to measure the levels of metal ions released from orthodontic mini-implants after immersion in different mouthwashes. Methods: 30 orthodontic mini-implants from two different companies each, divided randomly into 3 equal groups were immersed in HEXIDINE (ICPA health products, India), LISTERINE mouthwash (Johnson & Johnson ltd. Bangalore, India), and distilled deionized water incubated at 37°C for 30 days. Nickel, chromium, iron, copper, and manganese released from the orthodontic mini-implants were measured with an inductively coupled plasma spectrometer. Results: The results showed that ion release in Listerine mouthwash was significantly (P>0.05) higher than in the hexidine mouthwash and distilled water group. Conclusion: CHX-containing (HEXIDINE) mouthwash can be offered to patients who have orthodontic appliances rather than Na + alcohol–containing mouthwash (LISTERINE).

Giant cell fibroma (GCF) is a distinct soft tissue overgrowth that may mimic fibroma of the gingiva, but has a distinctive histopathological difference. Most often seen in the third decade of life, this lesion is often asymptomatic but is not aesthetic when present in the anterior region of the jaw having a distinct histopathological appearance. GCF contains cells with large, stellate shaped fibroblasts, near the surface of the fibrous mass, beneath the overlying epithelium. This case report presents a case of GCF of maxillary gingiva seen in a middle aged male patient. Surgical excision of the lesion was performed and no recurrence was seen till six months of follow up examination. However, long term follow-up is required to rule out any recurrence.

The aim of the present study is to evaluate Lateral Cephalometric norms in Chhattisgarh population by Burstone’s Analysis with the purpose of establishing normative standards, helpful in planning treatment of orthognathic surgery cases in this ethnic group. Sample size consisted of 200 subjects comprising 100 female and 100 male subjects (age group 18-25 yrs.) Subjects were included on the basis of the following inclusion criteria-1. Both male and female subjects aged between 18-25 years 2. Those subjects were selected who were belonging to the Chhattisgarhi Origin. 3. with acceptable facial profile and class I occlusion, normal overjet and overbite. Minimal amount of spacing and crowding were considered acceptable.4. With no history of prior orthodontic treatment. Kodac 800 orthopantomogram and Lateral Cephalometric Extra oral imaging system was used to take the digital lateral cephalograms of the subjects with functional head positioner, patients standing in natural head position. All the digital cephalograms were subjected to Burstone’s Hard tissue Analysis using Nemoceph software., Results indicate that both Chhattisgarh males and females compared to Caucasian counterparts have shorter cranial base length, greater facial convexity (which is non significant in males), greater, maxillary and mandibular skeletal prognathism, prominent chin, and decreased posterior divergence of the mandible. Decreased vertical height of maxilla anterioposteriorly, shorter lower face height, upper anterior and posterior dental heights as well as lower anterior and posterior dental heights. Decreased ramal height and mandibular body length less bony chin depth, steeper occlusal plane and increased sagittal base discrepancy and proclination of upper and lower incisors. So analysing the Craniofacial morphology of Chhattisgarh face, it can be concluded that Chhattisgrh population has a face which is skeletally prognathic, vertically short, steep occlusal plane and bimaxillary protrusive as compared to Caucasians.

To determine factors considered important by patients for choosing a dentist and to determine most important factors considered by patients using factor analysis. Methods: An exploratory research design was used to get insights to develop the attributes for classifying dental patients seeking dental care either preventive or curative care using discriminant analysis, conducted in few private hospitals and clinics in Delhi and NCR region. The study is largely based on the primary data collected from respondents using questionnaires. Second part of the study is FACTOR ANALYSIS for determining factors considered most important for choosing a dentist amongst various factors studied or surveyed using SPSS software. Fourteen variables were grouped into components and correlation between various variables was studied. Factors were identified which explained correlation amongst set of variables. Conclusion: Amongst all predictor variables - AGE, INCOME, DISTANCE and ATTITUDE TOWARDS DENTAL TREATMENT, were variables responsible for discriminating between dependent variables .i.e., preventive and curative dental care. i.e., amongst all predictor variables. Magnets have generated a great interest within dentistry and their applications are numerous mainly in retentive aids. The two main areas of use in dentistry are orthodontics and removable prosthodontics. The reason for popularity of magnets is their small size and attractive forces. This allows them to be placed within the prosthesis without being obstructive in the mouth. Mainly rare earth permanent magnets and soft ferro magnetic alloys are used in dental prosthesis. Retention of dentures by magnets is provided by their attraction or repulsion forces. Devices retaining the overdenture magnetically are called magnetic attachments. This article reviewed the alloys and method for magnetic attachments in overdentures.

Stafne bone cyst also known as lingual mandibular bone defect of the mandible is believed to be caused by mandible developing around the lobe of the submandibular salivary gland during embryonic life. Stafne bone cyst is generally encountered incidentally on routine plain radiograph. A dental practitioner should be familiar with stafne bone cyst to avoid misdiagnosis. We report a case of stafne bone cyst with review of literature.
