Community Acceptance and Coverage of Mass Drug Administration of Filariasis in Kodi Balaghar Sub-District, West Daya District

Background: Mass Drugs Administration (MDA) of Filariasis is effort for filariasis elimination. The first round of MDA is a reference for next rounds of MDA i mplementation. Coverage of treatment, community compliance and knowledge about filariasis are some that should be considered in the first round of MDA implementation and an indicator the success of filariasis elimination. Kodi Balaghar is a sub-district in South West Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara Province which has Mf-rate of 4.2% and received MDA at the first round implementation in 2013.The study aimed to determine the acceptance of Kodi Balaghar community on the first round of MDA implementation. Methods: It is an observational study in which conducted in April–November 2014 a five villages in Kodi Balaghar Sub-District. Samples were estimated proportion formula. There were 204 respondents randomly selected. Data were collected by interview using structured questionnaires, among people who obtained drugs on MDA in 2013and not based on primary health care data. Results: The coverage of MDA for filariasis in Kodi Balaghar Sub-District, South West District year 2013 was 3% from population target. There were 152 respondents did not know the implementation of MDA, 149 respondents were did not obtain information about MDA. All respondents who obtained drugs, admitted to ingested the drug. The main reason, 71 respondents for not taking drugs did not know the implementation of MDA programe, followed by 33 respondents were not present at the time of drugs distribution. Conclusion: There were lack of knowledge, information about MDA for filariasis among respondents and very low coverage of the MDA. Recommendation: Increased socialization as efforts to enhance knowledge and information about MDA for filariasis.
