When the loading or the geometry of a structure is not symmetrical about the crack axis, rupture occurs in mixed mode loading and the crack does not propagate in a straight line. It is then necessary to use kinking criteria to determine the new direction of crack propagation. The aim of this work is to present a numerical modeling of crack propagation under mixed mode loading conditions. This work is based on the implementation of the displacement extrapolation method in a FE code and the strain energy density theory in a finite element code. At each crack increment length, the kinking angle is evaluated as a function of stress intensity factors. In this paper, we analyzed the mechanical behavior of inclined cracks by evaluating the stress intensity factors. Then, we presented the examples of crack propagation in structures containing inclusions and cavities.

This theoretical study presents the characteristics of plasma monopole antennas in the VHF/UHF range using finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation. Results show that more broadband characteristics can be obtained by increasing the diameter of the plasma tube and that the minor lobes diminish in intensity as diameter increases. Furthermore, the nulls are replaced by low level radiation. Since the collision frequency, which is a function of gas pressure, represents the loss mechanism of plasma, decreasing its value increases the gain and radar cross section (RCS) of the antenna. Theoretical modeling shows that at higher plasma frequencies with respect to the signal frequency, the gain and radar cross section of the plasma antenna are high enough and that the impedance curves are altered as the plasma frequency varies. Using these preliminary studies, mutual impedance and gain of a broadside array of two parallel side-by-side plasma elements is presented.

This work treats the physical modeling of failure mechanisms by active earth pressure. This last is developed by retaining wall movement. A lot of research showed that wall displacement has a significant effect on active earth pressure. A good comprehension of active earth pressure phenomenon and its failure mechanisms help us to better conceive retaining walls. The conception of a small-scale model allowed the realization of active earth pressure tests, while displacing the mobile wall toward the outside of the massif. The studied material is that of Schneebeli; light two-dimensional material made of cylindrical plastic rollers, simulating granular non-cohesive soil. The evolution of shearing zones under continuous and discontinuous displacement modes of mobile walls by correlation pictures allows the investigation of the localization of deformations and failure mechanisms.
