The paper, employing the narratological method, examines and systematises self-referential speeches in Cestopis obsahující cestu do Horní Italie ([Travelogue containing a journey to Upper Italy] 1843) by Ján Kollár (1793 – 1852). Drawing on materials included in the kollar.elte.hu database, it maps typical forms of narrator’s self-referential speeches: the name of the author and his family members in the narration; the use and interpretation of the author’s own works in the narrative; the various forms of the author’s taste manifested in the text; the preferred literary, artistic, and architectural works he encounters or quotes; the presentation of the author’s ecclesiastical, philological, pedagogical, and other activities in the travelogue; and the narrative forms of self-referentiality that provide the narrator with the opportunity to express himself on an ideological level. The article also examines the various narrative roles which can be attributed to self-referential speeches and which point to the existence of an ideological system generally characteristic of the Enlightenment and Romantic periods in Central Europe. In this way, it reveals the characteristic features of Slavic national emblematism in the text and a certain broad system of ideas which can understood as religio triplex, which by merging revealed, natural, and national devoutness provides the narrator with a unified narrative framework.

Although the primary function of the lullaby is coded in the very word that designates it, its secondary functions are equally important – they have been shown to have an impact on child development and mental health of the performer. The act of singing a lullaby creates a specific communicative situation in which the recipient does not fully understand its lyrics. Usually, the communicative act also only involves the performer and the child and the uniquely intimate moment that emerges creates an opportunity for the expedient to express all their thoughts – even the most unpleasant ones. The psycho-hygienic function comes to the fore and provides the performer with a space for introspection. This dimension is often reflected in the texts of lullabies in negative motifs, such as death. In various allegorical forms, death is present in as many as one in five Slovak folk lullabies. In careful interpretative analysis, it is possible to detect subtle differences in the meaning of motifs that may not originally refer to death. On this basis, death motifs can be divided into primary ones, which always symbolise death (black earth, church, river, covering/throwing, ringing of the bells, calling of a close person from the other world) and secondary ones, which acquire this meaning by updating individual motifs or whole recurring stanzas in the vertical structure of the text.

In the culture of remembrance concerning the authors of Slovak Romantic literature, the poet Janko Kráľ (1822 – 1876) holds a distinctive position. Even though his oeuvre was not published in book form during his life and his last resting place remains unknown, since the 1920, his name and literary heritage have been gradually gaining a stable position in the Slovak literature as an independent topos. Mechanisms of the creation of literary representations of Janko Kráľ in which the character of references also depended on the choice of the genre can be defined as a process in several stages: rescuing the poet from oblivion (Vladimír Roy – poem dedicated to the centenary of the poet’s death, 1922) interpretation (Štefan Krčméry – speech at the unveiling of the memorial plaque on the house in which J. Kráľ was born, 1924), updating (Laco Novomeský – review of the volume Ňeznáme básňe Janka Kráľa [Janko Kráľ’s unknown poems], 1938), ideological narratives (speeches at the transfer of the remains of the poet to the national cemetery in Martin, 1940) – inspiration (Milan Rúfus, interpretive essay, 1976). These examples of remembrance practice connected with J. Kráľ outline the processes of familiarisation and canonisation. The transformations are reactions to the period social contexts, but also reflect the dynamics of cultural memory.

The aim of the study is to present and specify the possibilities of quantitative-corpus analysis of verse, which was characteristic for the work of the representatives of the avant-garde movement of Slovak surrealism (Rudolf Fábry, Július Lenko, Vladimír Reisel, Štefan Žáry and others). The study contains three chapters. The first one summarizes the previous research on the verses of Slovak surrealism and characterizes its general features. Then, isolated attempts at quantitative analysis of surrealist verse are presented and critically evaluated. The conclusion presents the possibilities of quantitative research on surrealist verse in digital processing, with the need to create a digital corpus of poetic texts that could be used for the analysis of a variety of versiological problems. The aim should be not only the digitisation of surrealist texts, but of the whole complex of Slovak poetry, so that selected problems can also be studied in their interrelations and from developmental aspects. From the methodological point of view, the study follows the current research in the field of quantitative versology.
