Focusing on the late 18th and early 19th occasional poetry, the article discusses the necessity of making accessible to contemporary audiences the works of older Slovak literature. It tackles textological problems such writing poses and addresses issues pertaining to its adequate evaluation from the point of view of literary history. An adequate assessment of the place these texts occupy in the history of the given literature primarily needs to be based on their complex interpretation springing from an intimate knowledge of the text. Making accessible the widest possible corpus of these literary works is therefore an integral part of research of older literature. In 2020, the authors Martin Braxatoris, Ivona Kollárová, Lenka Rišková and Oľga Vaneková published the monograph Príležitosť poézie. Miesto a význam príležitostnej poézie Juraja Palkoviča, Bohuslava Tablica a Pavla Jozefa Šafárika v dejinách slovenskej literatúry [Poetry’s occasion. The place and role of occasional poetry by Juraj Palkovič, Bohuslav Tablic and Pavel Jozef Šafárik in the history of Slovak literature] which, among other things, contains a selection of occasional verse. On the example of this edition, the article describes textological approaches adopted by the authors. Observations outlined in this article wish to inspire future research that would similarly aim at formulating a more exact set of defining principles concerning editorial handling of this type of texts.

The article takes a look at four literary texts and analyses them from the perspective of literary flaneurship. In doing so, the study accentuates the category of subject and space of the city from the point of view of their mutually given constitution and the parameters of media fixation of the flaneur act. Textual analysis is based on the understanding of flaneurship as a way of reorganising of the objective city space. The article looks at Ján Rozner’s autobiographical novels Sedem dní do pohrebu ([Seven days to the funeral] 2009) and Noc po fronte ([Night after the front] 2010) in the context of textual creation of Bratislava as a palimpsest, uncovering layers of city’s history in the intersection between personal memory and history. Stanislav Rakús’ novel Temporálne poznámky ([Temporal notes] 1993) is read primarily through the prism of literary flaneurship seen as a way of resisting disciplinary mechanisms of totalitarian power attempting at utilitarian structuration of space and time. The analysis of Peter Macsovszky’s Mykať kostlivcami ([Making skeletons dance] 2010) accentuates the intertextual handling of the space.

The article tackles the function of the narrator in contemporary fiction. After outlining the position of the narrator in classical and post-classical narratology, it analyses several innovative approaches to this category as found in contemporary Slovenian novel. The article provides an overview of general determinants of the narrator and attempts at showing that the category is still viable and offers possibilities for systematising. It looks at the narrator in the context of narratology and provides a definition and typology of this category. Given the syncretic character of the category of narrator, the knowledge of its multiple types – not restricted to the ones outlined by structuralist narratology – proves to be fruitful. The wider current definition of the narrator is most concisely outlined in the standard model of communication and consists of such elements as the real author, implied author, narrator, narratee, implied reader and real reader. The model, unlike older conceptualisations, is based on mediation and the activity of the narrator, not on the notion of the narrator as the speaker.
