Objetivo: Este estudo tem objectivos comparar a literacia em saúde mental dos adolescentes e jovens portugueses relativamente à depressão e ao abuso de álcool e analisar o padrão de respostas em termos de consistência e concordância para ambas as perturbações. Método: A amostra é constituída por 4938 adolescentes e jovens, 43,0% do género masculino e 56,7% do género feminino, com uma média de idades de 16,75 anos, que frequentam as escolas do 3.º ciclo do ensino básico e do ensino secundário, pertencentes à Direção Regional de Educação do Centro. Resultados: Os resultados revelam um nível de LSM modesto na generalidade das componentes. Ainda que se encontrem diferenças estatisticamente significativas (p<0,05) em 88,00% dos itens da LSM, o que indicia diferentes formas de encarar ambos os problemas de saúde mental. Conclusões: Os resultados revelam consistência em termos das componentes conhecimentos e competências para prestar a primeira ajuda e apoio aos outros e conhecimentos acerca do modo de prevenção das perturbações mentais. // Objectives: This study aims to compare the mental health literacy of adolescents and young Portuguese in what concerns depression and alcohol abuse and analyze the pattern of responses in terms of consistency and agreement for both disorders. Method: The sample consisted of 4938 adolescents and young people, 43.0% males and 56.7% females with a mean age of 16.75 years (standard deviation = 1,62 years), who attend schools of the 3rd cycle of basic education and secondary school, belonging to the Regional Education Directorate – Center. For data collection was used QuALiSMental (MHL). Results: The results showed a modest level of MHL in most components. Although there are statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) in 88.0% of the items of MHL, suggesting different ways of looking to both mental health problems. Conclusion: the results show consistency in terms of the components of knowledge and skills in providing first aid and support to others and knowledge about the prevention of mental disorders.

Objetivos: A presente investigação teve como principais objetivos descrever a qualidade subjetiva do sono e as perturbações do sono e analisar a intensidade dos sintomas depressivos e dos sentimentos de solidão em idosos institucionalizados; comparar estes dados com um grupo de idosos não institucionalizados e analisar a relação entre estas variáveis nos dois grupos. Métodos: Este estudo insere-se no Projeto Trajetórias do Envelhecimento de Idosos em Resposta Social de onde foi retirada uma amostra de cento e quarenta idosos sem défice cognitivo, com 70 institucionalizados e 70 não institucionalizados emparelhados por idade, sexo, escolaridade e estado civil. A média de idades foi de 76,58 (DP = 6,10), incluindo 104 mulheres e 36 homens. Como instrumentos foram utilizados um Questionário Sociodemográfico, o Questionário sobre o Sono na Terceira Idade, a Escala Geriátrica de depressão e a Escala de Solidão da Universidade da Califórnia, Los Angeles. Resultados: Verificou-se que os idosos institucionalizados apresentavam mais sentimentos de solidão do que os não institucionalizados. Contudo, não se verificaram diferenças entre os dois grupos em relação aos sintomas depressivos, qualidade subjetiva do sono ou perturbações do sono, com algumas exceções: os idosos residentes na comunidade mostraram ter a perceção de demorar mais tempo a adormecer, de acordar mais cedo e de ter mais pesadelos. Através de uma análise correlacional verificou-se, na amostra global, que quanto pior a qualidade subjetiva do sono mais sintomas depressivos se observavam e quanto mais sintomas depressivos, mais sentimentos de solidão, não havendo, contudo, relação entre o sono e a solidão. Conclusões: Concluímos que a situação de institucionalização se acompanha de mais sentimentos de solidão, mas não de sintomas depressivos ou de pior qualidade de sono. Por esse motivo, sugere-se que se desenvolvam programas de intervenção dirigidos à solidão em idosos institucionalizados. // Aims: The main objectives of this investigation were to describe the subjective quality of sleep and sleep disorders and analyze the intensity of depressive and loneliness symptoms in institutionalized elderly people; compare these data against a non-institutionalized elderly people subsample and analyze the relationship between these variables in both subsamples. Method: This study is part of Trajectories of Elderly Aging in Social Response Project from which a sample of one hundred and forty elderly people with no cognitive impairment was taken, with 70 institutionalized and 70 non-institutionalized matched by age, sex, education, and marital status. The average age was 76.58 (SD = 6.10), including 104 women and 36 men. The tools used for this analysis were a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Questionnaire About Sleep in the Older Adults, Geriatric Depression Scale, and the Loneliness Scale of the University of California, Los Angeles. Results: The study confirmed that institutionalized elderly people had more feelings of loneliness than those non-institutionalized. However, there were no differences between the two subsamples regarding depressive symptoms and the subjective sleep quality or sleep disturbances, with some exceptions: Elderly people living in the community showed to have the perception of taking more time to fall asleep, waking up earlier, and having more nightmares. Through a correlational analysis it was found, in both subsamples, that the worse the subjective sleep quality the more depressive symptoms were observed; and the more depressive symptoms, the more feelings of loneliness, despite not existing relation between sleep and loneliness. Conclusions: We concluded that institutionalization is linked to more feelings of loneliness but not to depressive symptoms nor to worse quality of sleep. For this reason, it is suggested that intervention programs are developed with a focus on elderly institutionalized populations.

Contexto e Objetivos: O Acidente Vascular Cerebral (AVC) potencia o desenvolvimento de disfunção executiva, conduzindo a défice no desempenho das tarefas do quotidiano. A avaliação neuropsicológica das funções executivas é importante para desenvolver estratégias de reabilitação adequadas. Assim, são objetivos descrever os dados normativos, precisão de diagnóstico, propriedades psicométricas e análise fatorial da Bateria de Avaliação Frontal (FAB), instrumento breve e de rápida administração, numa amostra de idosos com AVC. Método: Inserida no projeto Trajetórias do Envelhecimento de Idosos em Resposta Social, esta investigação conta com uma amostra de 112 pessoas idosas com diagnóstico médico de AVC e 157 pessoas idosas de um subgrupo de controlo sem AVC. Os sujeitos apresentam idades compreendidas entre os 60 e os 100 anos (M = 78,20; DP = 7,57) sendo maioritariamente do sexo feminino (n = 194). A avaliação inclui entrevistas e testes neuropsicológicos agrupados em medidas de funcionamento executivo, medidas cognitivas de referência e medidas clínicas de controlo. Resultados: As variáveis idade e escolaridade interferiram nas pontuações obtidas na amostra clínica, não sendo verificado impacto da variável sexo. Para um ponto de corte de 7, a FAB teve uma sensibilidade de 83,4% e especificidade de 66,1 % (AUC = 0,64); revelou um alfa de Cronbach de 0,79 e correlações fortes com os testes executivos (teste de Stroop, Figura Complexa de Rey, fator Atencional-Executivo do Montreal Cognitive Assessment e Alternância nos testes de Fluência verbal). A análise fatorial confirmatória apontou uma estrutura com um fator. Conclusões: A FAB apresenta boa consistência interna, validade convergente e validade de constructo, aparentando ser uma escala útil para avaliar o défice executivo em pessoas idosas com AVC. Dadas algumas limitações do estudo, que poderão explicar a fraca precisão diagnóstica da FAB, são incentivadas investigações futuras pois a FAB revelou-se um instrumento com propriedades psicométricas promissoras. // Background and Goals: Stroke potentiates the development of executive dysfunction, leading to impairment in the performance of daily activities. The neuropsychological assessment of executive functions is important to develop adequate rehabilitation strategies. Thus, describing the normative data, diagnostic accuracy, psychometric properties and factor analysis of the Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB), a brief and easy to administer instrument, in a clinical sample with stroke are objectives of this study. Method: Being part of the Aging Trajectories of Institutionalized Elderly, this research has a sample of 112 elderly people with a medical diagnosis of stroke and a control subgroup of 157 elderly people. The subjects have ages between 60 and 100 years old (M = 78.20, SD = 7.57), mostly females (n = 194). The measurements used include interviews and neuropsychological tests grouped in executive functioning measures, cognitive measures of reference, and clinical measures of control. Results: The variables age and education affect the scores obtained in the clinical subgroup, having the variable gender no impact on these. Using a cutoff score of 7, the FAB had a sensitivity of 83.4% and a specificity of 66.1% for screening stroke (AUC = 0.64); showed a Cronbach's α of 0.79, and strong correlations with executive tests (Stroop test, Rey Complex Figure, Attentional-Executive factor of Montreal Cognitive Assessment and Switching in the verbal fluency tests). The confirmatory factor analysis supported a one-factor structure. Conclusions: The FAB presents good internal consistency, convergent, and construct when used for the elderly with stroke. Due to some limitations of the study, which may explain the weak discriminant validity, further investigations are encouraged because FAB has shown promising psychometric properties.

Objetivos: O presente artigo apresenta um estudo que visa aprofundar as qualidades psicométricas da Escala de Autoeficácia para a Atividade com Sentido (EAASentido), através de análises de fidelidade e validade. A escala foi desenvolvida a partir dos constructos teóricos da autoeficácia, da aprendizagem autodirigida e da atividade de pessoas de idade avançada no âmbito do projeto europeu PALADIN, com o objetivo de criar um instrumento apto a avaliar até que ponto os seniores se sentem confiantes para realizarem atividades com sentido, por si próprios. Método: A investigação é de natureza não experimental e incidiu sobre uma amostra de 503 seniores e idosos das regiões Norte e Centro de Portugal com uma média etária de 71,66 (51 a 96 anos) a quem foram aplicadas a EAASentido, a Escala de Autoestima de Rosenberg, a Positive Affect and Negative Affect Scale, a Satisfaction With Life Scale, o Meaning in Life Questionnaire, a Escala de Autoeficácia para a Autodireção na Saúde e a Instrumental Activities of Daily Living. Resultados: A consistência interna encontrada foi de 0,94 (alfa de Cronbach) e a validade de constructo revelou muito bons indicadores. No que respeita à análise de componentes principais, os resultados apontaram para três dimensões e não as cinco inicialmente previstas: atividades de desenvolvimento pessoal e participação social, atividades instrumentais, e atividades espirituais/religiosas. Analisadas as saturações dos itens propôs-se a reformulação da escala, eliminando cinco itens. A consistência interna global dos 15 itens manteve-se elevada (0,92). Conclusões: Conclui-se que a EAASentido, com 15 itens, é bastante consistente e adequada para avaliar em que medida os seniores têm confiança na sua capacidade para se envolverem em atividades com sentido (em termos de indicador global), possuindo boa validade de constructo. Em estudos futuros sugere-se a continuidade da avaliação da sua estrutura dimensional, nomeadamente através de análises confirmatórias. // Aims: This article aims to deepen the psychometric study of the Self-Efficacy for Meaningful Activities Scale (EAASentido) through reliability and validity analyses. The scale was developed under the theoretical constructs of self-efficacy, self-directed learning and meaning factors of older people within the context of the European project PALADIN and was intended to be a useful device for the assessment of the confidence of seniors for getting involved by themselves with meaning activities. Method: A sample of 503 seniors and older people from the North and Centre regions of Portugal was studied with a mean age of 71.66 (ranging from 51 to 96 years old). The subjects answered to the following scales and questionnaires: Self-Efficacy for Meaningful Activities Scale, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Positive Affect and Negative Affect Scale, Satisfaction With Life Scale, Meaning in Life Questionnaire, Self-Efficacy for Self-Direction in Health Scale and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living. Results: An internal consistency of 0.94 was obtained (alpha of Cronbach) and the construct validity showed very good indicators. Concerning principal components analysis, three dimensions emerged from the data and not the five initially conceptualized: 1) activities of personal development and social participation, 2) instrumental activities, and 3) spiritual/religious activities. Resulting from the principal components analysis, we propose the reformulation of the scale, eliminating five complex items. The final 15 items still showed very good reliability (0.92). Conclusions: Based on the results obtained we can conclude that the Scale with 15 items is a consistent and adequate measure to assess to what extent older people have confidence in their ability to get involved in several meaningful activities by themselves. The scale shows good construct validity. However in future studies it is suggested to continue the evaluation of its dimensional structure notably through confirmatory factor analyses.

Objetivos: A rede social pessoal tem sido considerada um fator de proteção importante para lidar com a adversidade. Este estudo pretende caracterizar as redes sociais pessoais de jovens em regime de acolhimento prolongado, comparando os resultados segundo o sexo. Métodos: Participaram 84 jovens, 49 raparigas e 35 rapazes, entre os 12 e os 20 anos (M ± DP = 15,26 ± 2,17), acolhidos em 6 Lares de Infância e Juventude (distrito de Santarém, Portugal), avaliados com o Instrumento de Análise da Rede Social Pessoal (caracteriza as dimensões estrutural, funcional e relacional-contextual das redes). Resultados: As redes dos jovens em situação de acolhimento residencial são constituídas, em média, por 12 elementos, são fragmentadas, diversificadas e predominantemente compostas por familiares. O nível de apoio social percebido é elevado, especialmente função emocional e informativa, registando-se elevada satisfação com o suporte social. A frequência de contactos com os membros da rede associa-se à distância geográfica. Os rapazes apresentam redes ligeiramente maiores e valorizam mais as relações familiares que as raparigas (p < 0,05). As raparigas identificam mais elementos de famílias amigas (p < 0,05), tendem a identificar redes mais diversificadas e mais densas, assim como percebem as relações como sendo mais simétricas (p < 0,05). As raparigas identificam redes maioritariamente femininas e os rapazes tendencialmente masculinas (p < 0,01). Os rapazes percebem maiores níveis de apoio informativo (p = 0,031), companhia social (p = 0,040) e acesso a novos contactos (p = 0,001). Conclusões: Este estudo confirma a importância da família para jovens em regime de acolhimento, apesar da distância, da frequência de contactos e dos motivos subjacentes ao acolhimento. Estas conclusões remetem-nos para a importância de perceber a perspetiva dos próprios jovens sobre as suas relações interpessoais, de forma a potenciar o suporte social informal e a planificar um processo de autonomização sustentado. // Aims: The social personal network has been considered an important protection factor when dealing with adversity. This study aims to characterize the social personal network of youngsters in foster homes during extended periods of time, by comparing the results according to sex. Method: Eighty-four youngsters participated in this study, 49 girls and 35 boys, aged between 12 and 20 years old (M = 15.26; SD = 2.17), living in 6 institutions of foster care (Santarém, Portugal). All were assessed through the Personal Social Networks Analysis Tool (characterize the structural, functional, and contextual/relational dimensions of networks). Results: The social network of youngsters in foster care is composed of 12 elements, on average, it is fragmented, diversified, and primarily composed of family members. The level of social support perception is high (emotional and informative function), having a high satisfaction with social support. The contact frequency with the social network members is associated with the geographic distance. Boys have networks slightly bigger than girls and they value more family relations. Girls tend to identify more elements from “friend-families” (p < 0.05), they tend to identify more diverse and denser networks, and they see the relationships as more symmetric (p < 0.05). Girls identify networks mainly feminine and boys tendentiously masculine (p < 0.01). Boys recognize a higher level of informative support (p = 0.031), companionship (p = 0.040), and access to new contacts (p = 0.001). Conclusions: This study confirms the relevance of family to the young people in foster care, despite the distance, the frequency of contacts, and the underlying reasons that lead them to foster homes. These findings lead us to the importance of understanding the perspective from young people themselves about their interpersonal relationships, in order to enhance the informal social support and to plan a supported autonomization process.

Objetivos: Analisar os níveis de inteligência espiritual, bem-estar psicológico, sintomas depressivos e ansiosos, saúde mental e física em idosos que frequentam Lar ou Centro de Dia e explorar as associações existentes entre todas estas variáveis (e com algumas variáveis sociodemográficas). Método: Neste estudo não-experimental, foram aplicados, em formato de entrevista individual, a Escala de Inteligência Espiritual Integrada, Questionário de Avaliação Funcional Multidimensional de Idosos (avalia saúde física e mental), Escala de Ânimo (bem-estar psicológico), Escala de Depressão Geriátrica e Inventário de Ansiedade Geriátrica, a 65 idosos (idade, M = 83,46; DP = 6,65; sexo feminino, 70,8%). Resultados: A maioria dos idosos percecionou a sua saúde física (80%) e mental (84%) como insatisfatória. Uma percentagem importante apresentou sintomas depressivos (56,9%) e ansiosos (64,6%). A pontuação total de inteligência espiritual correlacionou-se positivamente com as atitudes face ao envelhecimento e negativamente com a pontuação total de sintomas depressivos. No que respeita às dimensões da inteligência espiritual, a consciência associou-se positivamente com as atitudes face ao envelhecimento (bem-estar psicológico) e negativamente com os sintomas depressivos. O significado associou-se negativamente com a pontuação total do bem-estar psicológico e suas dimensões solidão/insatisfação e agitação). A graça associou-se positivamente com a pontuação total do bem-estar psicológico e com a sua dimensão atitudes face ao envelhecimento e negativamente com os sintomas depressivos e ansiosos. Por fim, refira-se que idosos a residir em Lar apresentaram valores inferiores de graça e superiores de significado (inteligência espiritual), bem como de sintomas depressivos e ansiosos. Conclusões: Mostrou-se preocupante a prevalência de saúde física e mental insatisfatória, de depressão e ansiedade. Níveis maiores totais e em algumas dimensões de inteligência espiritual associaram-se a níveis menores de sintomas depressivos e ansiosos e níveis maiores de bem-estar psicológico. Estes dados parecem apontar para a eventual importância de promover a inteligência espiritual junto de idosos institucionalizados. // Aims: To analyze the levels of spiritual intelligence, psychological well-being, depressive and anxious symptoms, and mental and physical health in elderly attending nursing homes or social centers and explore associations between all these variables (and with some sociodemographic variables). Method: In this non-experimental study, the Integrated Spiritual Intelligence Scale, the Older Americans Resources and Services (to evaluate physical and mental health), the Philadelphia Geriatric Center Morale Scale (evaluates psychological well-being), the Geriatric Depression Scale and the Geriatric Anxiety Inventory were applied, in an interview format, to 65 aged citizens (age, M = 83.46; SD = 6.65; female, n = 46; 70.8%). Results: Most elders perceived their physical health (80.0%) and mental health (84.0%) as unsatisfactory. An important percentage presented depressive (56.9%) and anxiety symptoms (64.6%). The total score of spiritual intelligence was positively correlated with attitudes towards aging and negatively with the total score of depressive symptoms. Conscience (spiritual intelligence) was positively associated with attitudes towards aging (psychological well-being) and negatively with depressive symptoms. Meaning (spiritual intelligence) was positively associated with the total score of psychological well-being and it´s dimensions, solitude/dissatisfaction, and agitation, and negatively with depressive and anxious symptoms. Grace was positively associated with the total score of psychological well-being and it´s dimension attitudes towards aging and negatively with depressive and anxiety symptoms. Finally, aged citizens living in nursing homes showed lower values of grace and higher values of meaning (spiritual intelligence), depressive, and anxious symptoms. Conclusions: It is of concern the prevalence of unsatisfactory physical and mental health, depression, and anxiety. Higher total levels (and in some of the dimensions) of spiritual intelligence were associated with lower levels of depressive and anxious symptoms and higher levels of psychological well-being. These data seem to point to the eventual importance of promoting spiritual intelligence in institutionalized elderly.
