Este ensayo constituye una reflexión, de naturaleza antropológica, sobre los retos que supone para la especie humana el creciente avance del virus de inmuno-deficiencia humana (VIH) y del síndrome de inmuno-deficiencia adquirida (SIDA). Este tipo de reflexión guarda estrechas relaciones con la critica de los modos de vida de las sociedades urbano-industriales y de la imposición de ideologías excluyentes. Privilegio, sin embargo, una visión humanística del problema para combinar ambas críticas.

Taking advantage of the opportunity that has been offered to me in this magazine, I will begin the work with messages addressed to youth, especially to university students, which have been recorded in history due to their deep significance. Obviously, history is full of messages that conform to what was described in the previous paragraph and, therefore, only a few have been chosen -very few for reasons of space- that I consider more important because they are attributed to eminently scientific men, to be related in some way with the title of this document and because they also help us with what I believe should be one of our most important goals: an analysis of our daily attitude; and try to change it, if we really are convinced that what we have now is not the most satisfactory.

Water, the basic element for life, has necessarily been linked to the development of humanity. Since in the Mesopotamia or land between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, a civilization was developed by the use made of these waters by its inhabitants, passing through the Egyptian culture, which owed its subsistence to the annual floods that the Nile made its banks , man has tried to understand the behavior of this element. In America, our ancestors also did the same, highlighting the Inca irrigation systems, some still in use.

The work assigned to this commission is the formulation of a work plan with a view to the accreditation of training programs, particularly the accreditation of an educational program, understood as this, to establish a mechanism that allows public recognition of its quality; say, the public guarantee that said program complies with a certain set of quality standards.

In Venezuela more than 75% of its population lives in the two zones of highest seismic hazard according to the seismic code of 1987; In the period 1530-1990 some 148 seismic events have occurred in our country that have caused some kind of damage in Venezuelan populations. In this work the seismic activity in the period 1970-1990 is analyzed and the most important destructive earthquakes occurred in that period. Likewise, a synthesis of the geology of active faults is presented. The attenuation laws used in the country are evaluated based on the collected accelerographic information and the most adaptable to our environment is concluded. The registered horizontal and vertical accelerations are compared and an av / ah ratio is recommended for the country.

Para el período lectivo 96-97 la Universidad Católica Andrés Bello estrena nueva carrera en el área de la ingeniería, la cual ha sido bautizada como Ingeniería Informática. Básicamente, es una carrera en el área de las ciencias de la computación con énfasis en telemática yen ingeniería del software, donde se ha incluido la formación básica a nivel de ingeniería y administración, al igual que en las otras carreras ya presentes en la Facultad. Esta nueva carrera ha sido diseñada respetando las condiciones de generalidad que ya poseen las carreras que funcionan dentro de la Facultad, de tal manera, que el profesional egresado de esta nueva carrera, podrá desempeñar una gran cantidad de papeles en su vida profesional. Se describirán a continuación las consideraciones generales que se tomaron en cuenta para el diseño de la carrera, a nivel del mercado de trabajo, la oferta de estudios similares, la situación de la informática en el país, el desarrollo del área a nivel mundial, la situación de la informática dentro de la propia Universidad y el modelo teórico que sustenta el diseño curricular.
