Identification of gifted children has been a complex psychological and pedagogical task. In Ukraine, there is still no consistent system for identification of gifted children. The article is devoted to the analysis of basic approaches to the search and identification of gifted children. The problems that prevent the proper identification of gifted children are presented.
The experience of foreign countries and educational institutions of Donetsk and Lugansk oblasts concerning the identification of gifted pupils is considered. The basic procedures that identify early giftedness, including intelligence tests, achievement tests, abilities tests, creativity tests, interviews, observations, and peer review are described.
Identification of gifted children is a long process associated with the analysis of the development of a particular child, so diagnostic procedures should be conducted several times during the education in a comprehensive school. Understanding the components of giftedness can help identify potentially gifted children. They include predispositions, inclinations, interests, curiosity, the speed of assimilation of new information, tendency to constant comparisons, manifestation of general intellect, persistence, creativity, intuition, ability to develop personal strategies and tactics when solving common and new problems, etc.
The practice of identifying gifted children in the eastern Ukrainian region includes: observation, expert evaluation, parent surveys, creation of gifted children's data bases, pilot classes on special programs, study of children's creative activity, organization of Olympiads, intellectual competitions, conferences, tournaments, sports competitions, conducting diagnostic procedures using various psychological methods.
