The problem of socialization of the elderly people began to be actively studied in the field of social pedagogy only in recent decades. Since the third age has its own specific features of development, due to the influence of various objective and subjective factors, it is necessary to use effective means to maintain the physical, mental, social, and the spiritual state of elderly people as well as raise the quality of their life in the information society. Based on the synthesis of research in philosophy, sociology, psychology, cultural studies, pedagogy and social pedagogy, it has been determined that art is a powerful tool for influencing both the personal development of an elderly person, his inner world, as well as the socialization process as a whole. Socialization of the elderly people in the information society is complicated by the emergence of a new kind of social reality, namely the virtual one, which they are not adapted to, leading to their marginalization. Therefore, in these conditions the support of socialization through art will contribute to the adaptation, integration and mitigation of the conditions that result in narrowing the range of real social communication. The psychological and socio-pedagogical mechanisms of the third-age people socialization have been described. The first ones are as follows: imprinting, social imprinting, existential pressure, imitation, identification, and reflection; the second ones are: traditional, institutional, stylized and interpersonal. Each of these mechanisms has its own specific influence on the socialization of the elderly people, provides a basis for understanding the need to build an appropriate model to support their socialization through art in the long run.
