This study aimed to investigate paternal engagement as a factor related to aggressiveness regulation in four to six year old children. Fifty fathers answered questionnaires regarding their involvement with their children and sociodemographic data and 26 teachers answered questionnaires about the social development of the children. Descriptive and inferential statistical techniques were employed. It was found that the fathers were engaged with their children and more frequently performed activities related to emotional support, discipline and physical games. The fathers with more working hours were less engaged and the more the father involved himself in the basic care and household tasks, the less his child presented externalizing problems. Policies and programs to support paternal involvement are essential for the transformation and consolidation of male responsibility in relation to children and the prevention of persistent aggression.

Even though there is great interest in the fi eld of child abuse, there are few methods to assess it, which hinders the development of interventions. The Child Abuse Potential (CAP) Inventory is considered effective in the early identifi cation of parents at risk of physically abusing their children, and a good tool to evaluate interventions in the fi eld of child abuse. This study’s objective was to perform the CAP Inventory’s criterion validity by comparing the results obtained by caregivers at a high risk of abusing their children with those obtained by caregivers at a low risk for child abuse. Two groups of parents participated in the study: a group of 20 parents reported for physically abusing their children and a group of 20 non-offending parents with the same socio-economic and educational levels. The results indicated the instrument is able to discriminate between the two groups, showing it to be a good tool for use in child protection services, to assess interventions, public policies, and research.

The aim of this study was to analyze studies about the effect of temperament and gender on child development, from birth to school age. A systematic search was performed through PubMed, PsycInfo, Web of Science, LILACS and SciELO. The keywords temperament and gender or sex differences were used to identify empirical studies published between 2004 and April/ 2009. The results showed that studies about child sample with typical development, boys outperformed girls in the dimensions of Negative Emotionality, Impulsivity, Activity and Approaching Behavior, whereas girls outperformed boys in the dimensions of Fear, Cooperation and Positive Mood. Effortful Control was studied in children at biological and psychosocial risks where the girls outperformed boys. In conclusion, there were differences in temperament traits on developmental pathway of children from birth to school-age associated with gender variable.

The Scale of Adaptation-Revised (EDAO-R) provides a measure of the adaptive effi cacy, understood as the degree of success in coping with the vicissitudes of life. Its assessment is based on clinical interview material. The study aimed at obtaining evidence of the validity of a self-report version of EDAO-R, identifi ed as EDAO-AR. Items were developed to assess the quality of adaptation of two sectors of the personality: Affective-Relational (A-R) and Productivity (Pr). Sample of 237 outpatients and caregivers. We obtained evidence of validity based on internal structure (internal consistency, factor analysis, cluster analysis), and validity based on external variables (relationship between EDAO-AR and the Assessment Symptoms Scale-40/EAS-40). Results showed good internal consistency and three dimensions for both sectors: focus on the problem situation, focus on interpersonal relationships and focus on self. Was obtained, as expected, negative correlations between EDAO-AR and EAS-40. Suggestions were made for the second version of the scale.

Training experiences in higher education are essential to professional development. This qualitative study investigated how internship experiences contribute to career adaptability development and to the transition between the roles of student and professional among senior university students. Six Civil Engineering senior students, aged between 22 and 29 years, were individually interviewed following a semi-structured interview protocol. The interviews were subsequently content analyzed. Results revealed that internship experiences infl uence the development of career adaptability, especially in the dimensions of curiosity and confi dence. In addition, several characteristics of the internship experiences mentioned by respondents could be related to career development, revealing their importance to the transition process from student to professional roles. The article concludes with implications for practice and research

This study’s objective was to discuss the psychotherapy process of a 12-year old boy affected by Asperger Syndrome, a pervasive developmental disorder, cared for in a public outpatient service. The therapeutic setting and the box of toys had to be modifi ed and made more fl exible to address the child’s peculiarities. The bond established between the therapist and patient and the importance of dealing with the differences between Self/Not-self are discussed. The treatment, adapted to the conditions of a public outpatient service, contributed to the child’s communication and interaction skills, which shows the importance of discussing psychodynamic psychotherapy with this population and how to implement it.
