Reflections on the activity of translation have
manifested, for over two thousand years, both radical and
diametrically opposed postures. The old tension between
literal and free translation, for example, has still not been
satisfactorily resolved. Despite manifesting itself, in the
present day, under different labels, it is always, essentially,
the same old tension that arises. Starting with the assumption
that extreme positions always miss the mark, as they
generally emphasize one aspect at the expense of others,
this article defends an integrated view of the phenomenon
of translation. In the appendix to the article, a questionnaire
may be found with questions and answers about theories of
translation.
