This paper aims to present, in a critical way, some usual definitions of style, according to Enkvist’s book named Lingüística e Estilo. We divide them into two groups. One of them concerns definitions based on metaphysical and psycological grounds; the other one comprehends definitions which take into account the following parameters: emphasis; choice; individual characteristics; deviation related to a norm; set of collective characteristics; and relationships between linguistic entities in texts longer than sentences. Finally, as a conclusion, we recognize that the riffaterrean conception about Stylistics is more operative.

O após-guerra trouxe um inevitável questionamento de valores antes considerados como referenciais fixos. A súbita e total destruição de cidades, vidas e relações familiares representa um conjunto de circunstâncias que levaram o homem a refletir sobre o fato de que tudo pode deixar de existir subitamente, até mesmo o aspecto mais material de sua vida, seu espaço físico. Essa quebra da relação de continuidade, juntamente com a convicção de que não se pode acreditar ou confiar no amanhã, fez do homem um ser cínico e imediaista. É interessante portanto observar como o discurso do amor transformou-se nessa situação de modernidade. Para tal exame escolhemos o romance Hotel du Lac da escritora britânica Anita Brookner, vencedor do prêmio Booker Prize em 1984, ano em que foi escrito o romance.
