This paper employs the overarching concept of communities to express the social contexts within which human creativity is exercised and learning happens. With the advent of digital technologies, these social contexts, the communities we engage in, change radically. The new landscape brought about by digital technologies is characterized by new qualities, new opportunities for action, new community affordances. The term onlife is adopted from the Onlife Manifesto and used to distinguish the new kind of communities brought about by the modern digital technologies, the Onlife Communities . Design principles are presented to foster such communities and support their members. To showcase the use of these design principles, the paper presents a concrete system addressing creativity and learning in the field of cultural heritage (history teaching and learning): ViSTPro. ViSTPro enables the visualization of spatiotemporal processes, thus facilitating active learning of historical events. To demonstrate the flexibility of the ViSTPro and its capability to provide insightful visualizations, a pilot application has been elaborated on the Battle of Marathon, 490 BC.

The new academic discipline of Data Sciences (DS) has been developed in recent years mainly because of the need to make decisions based on huge amounts of data -- Big Data. In parallel, there has been a huge progress in the development of technologies that enable to identify patterns, to filter big data, and to provide relevant meanings to information, due to machine learning and sophisticated inference techniques. The profession of Data Scientist (or Data Analyst) has become highly demanded in recent years. It is required in the business sector where data is the “oxygen” for business survival; it is needed in the governmental sector in order to improve its services to the citizens; and it is very imperative in the scientific world, where large data depositories collected in varied disciplines have to be integrated, mined and analyzed, in order to enable interdisciplinary research. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how the scientific discipline of Data Sciences fits into academic programs intended to prepare data analysts for the business, public, government, and academic sectors. The article first delineates the Data Cycle, which portrays the transformation of data and their derivatives along the route from generation to decision making. The cycle includes the following stages: problem definition  identifying pertinent data sources  data collection, and storing (including cleansing and backup)  data integration  data mining  processing and analysis  visualization  learning and decision-making  feedback for future cycles. Within this cycle, there might be sub cycles, where a number of stages are repeated and reiterated. It should be noted that the data cycle is generic. It might have slight variations under various circumstances, however, there is not much difference between the scientific cycle and all the other cycles. Each stage within the cycle requires different tools, namely hardware and software technologies that support the stage. This article classifies these tools. The final part of the article suggests a typology for academic DS programs. It outlines an academic program that will be offered to those wishing to practice the Data Analyst profession. An introductory course that should be mandatory to all students campus-wide is sketched.

Whenever innovative survey techniques allow gathering detailed information about fixed building interiors, establishing the conditions, authenticity or the structural problems of historic built in mosaics rests a quite complex process. This paper analyzes the reliability of digital post processing techniques to support distinguishing among application methods, original and remade areas, and for detailed damage assessment. The results are destined to form an interdisciplinary repository regarding the Byzantine mosaics of Torcello as hearth of the Veneto-Byzantine mosaic school of the 13th c.

The report presents some problems and best practices for providing open access to digital repositories for scientific publications in social sciences and humanities (SSH). Editions in SSH have specifics that concerns publications in many national languages, deep archives, metadata, search, etc. As an example, the Central and Eastern European Online Library – CEEOL has been chosen, because CEEOL is a leading provider and a repository offering a highly specialized and comprehensive collection of fulltext publications in SSH. Over 75% of the editions indexed in CEEOL are open access. The study analyzes the main characteristics of CEEOL as: services, functionalities, opportunities for using its resources and the state of the Bulgarian collection.

This research presents some of the problems in developing digital cultural resources for educational application of serious games. A model of wide access to context-based knowledge is considered. Some elements of gaming have been explored when creating learning modules and tools for contextual use of digital cultural resources and making them accessible to people with visual disabilities. The modeling of an accessible game module is presented by applying selected accessibility criteria to people with special educational needs.

This paper studies problems related to the development of craft software. It proposes an approach to developing an application for digital representation of color stitches in cross stitch pattern and crochet software. A database containing information about the most popular embroidery floss brands in Bulgaria has been built. The software module can be used independently for digital representation of a needlework thread catalog and floss conversion or to be embedded for digital representation of color stitches in cross stitch and crochet software. The software is oriented to people manufacturing national Bulgarian costumes and clothing with national Bulgarian embroidery.

Institution photo archives are important digital resource with a large proportion of old photos, which makes them of great value in aspects of history and culture. Based on OAIS (Open Archival Information System) Model, the Anhui University Memory Project (AMP) designed and realized a Long-term Preservation Process, which included a series of standard procedures for lifecycle management. Then digital resource repository and digital memory site were developed according to demands of Anhui University for constructing and presenting memory. This paper aims to introduce the architecture and achievements of AMP, as well as the design and implementation of long-term preservation process and two distinctive ways of resource organization and memory presentation.

We present here an ongoing study and experimentation of a system (QueryLab) able to query different inventories at the same time, providing a larger virtual collection that can be explored through intuitive and attractive search tools. Much of the European cultural heritage is embedded in rural areas and remote regions, often closely linked with the natural environment. As the culture sector evolves and changes due to digitization, so do the skills required of individuals active in the sector. These changes can only be met by relevant and demand-sensitive educational offers.
