This article is a continuation of a study published in the second issue of the sixth volume
of the journal “Christianity in the Middle East” [Lavrentyeva 2022]. The article is devoted
to the architectural history of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, compiled
on the basis of an analysis of pilgrimage descriptions of the shrine in surviving written
sources. Here we consider a very interesting, but little studied period of 400 years, from
the 9th to the 12th centuries, during which the temple complex was looted and burned
five times and once completely rebuilt. During this time, the architectural appearance
of the shrine has seriously changed, but it is very difficult to trace what specific changes
were made due to the loss of sources. The considered period of the architectural history of
the Church of the Resurrection is very attractive. Firstly it was restored by masters from
the Middle East, and in the 11th century it was restored by Byzantine masters. However,
in the 12 century the complex of church buildings became a one building, decorated in
accordance with European architectural traditions. Of course, in the subsequent time,
the shrine was subjected to attacks, robberies and fires, and the temple, as it was under
the crusaders, has not survived to our time. And the so-called «restoration issue» left
from the Middle Ages only recognizable forms reproduced in modern materials.
