Telemedicine networks allow remote delivery of medical services. Each service uses some applications, such as videoconference or audio-conference in order to conduct medical procedures. These services imply certain minimum requirements to ensure appropriate performance. At present, Universidad Militar Nueva Granada has no such tele-medicine network for academic purposes, where students (medicine students and researchers) can deploy some e-health services. In this paper, we propose an optical network for telemedicine services intended to connect two of the headquarters of Universidad Militar Nueva Granada. Then we evaluate the performance of the network according to application requirements. Finally, we compare the performance of the optical network and the values stated by international standards

An assessment of the technical impacts of distributed generation (DG) on electric power systems is presented in this paper. In order to quantify the impacts of DG on electric networks, four indices have been proposed, which assess aspects such as active power losses, reactive power losses, voltage profile and congestion. These indices are dimensionless and compare the network operation with and without DG. Such indices represent a decision-supporting tool for the network operator. To evaluate the impact of DG on the network, two testing systems of 13 and 34 busses are considered. An exhaustive evaluation considering all possible DG locations is presented. The potential impact is analyzed under several operation modes. Results show that while the DG can contribute to the improvement of voltage profile and power loss reduction, an inappropriate location and sizing of it may lead to an increase in power losses and congestion in the network.

In order to strengthen the National System of Agricultural Science and Technology, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development-MARD (within the "Transition of Agriculture" project) launched a series of studies in 2006 aimed at defining Prospective Investigation-guidelines documentation for 20 productive chains. This initiative included the implementation of the second phase of the study by the second half of 2008, which involves the productive chain of sugar cane agro-industry focused on Panela due to its economic and social importance. In this context the Panela industry represents a sub-sector dedicated to the generation of products from sugar cane, positioning such products, right after coffee, as the second line of rural employment generation and occupies the ffth position in the country crops classification in terms of acreage (felds). This article presents the results of a study whose main purpose was to define prospective research guidelines for the productive chain by means of a conceptual and methodological perspective that involved the use of technological management tools such as performance analysis, benchmarking, technological monitoring, commercial market trends and foresight. This was achieved through a successful technology intelligence system, where four strategic areas for research and technological development were identifed for the chain by grouping 11 technological needs that are to be addressed from 41 baselines linked to priority projects. The goal of this paper is to show the results of implementing two cloud segmentation techniques on GOES (satellite images). The first technique is based on regions and gray-level thresholding. The second technique is based on boundaries and the Hough transform. Finally, the results of our experiments (with the two segmentation methods) are compared with results from segmented imaging obtained from specialized software packages, where spectral band separation is applied using the information interest.

This paper presents the evolution of protocol MMAC-CR (Multichannel MAC protocol for Cognitive Radio). To this end, we analyze the advantages of the protocol and we study the operational activities that pertain to cognitive radio where the medium access control protocol plays a very infuential role, namely spectrum mobility, channel sensing, resource allocation, and spectrum sharing. Moreover, we describe the variations of the MMAC-CR protocol according to the negotiation and reservation mechanisms implemented.
