“Time is my matter, the present time, the present men, the present life”, wrote Carlos
Drummond de Andrade in “Mãos dadas”. This paper about O amanuense Belmiro, published in
1937 by Cyro dos Anjos, analyses some aspects of the relationship, recognized by the author,
between his novel and Drummond’s poetic work. Besides quoting the famous poems of Alguma
poesia (1930) and Brejo das Almas (1934), Belmiro’s diary presents the same impasses of the
book Sentimento do mundo (1940), which includes the poem “Mãos dadas”.
