This paper aims at analyzing Haroun and the sea of stories, by
Salman Rushdie, based on the concept of tradition and its relationship to oral
narratives. In order to do so, methodologically, we make use of Octavio Paz,
when he discusses the concept of tradition; José Carlos Sebe Meihy, who
discusses what orality is; Acildo Leite da Silva, who presents the idea of oral
tradition; Walter Benjamin, who discusses the notion of traditional narrator; and
Jacques le Goff, who presents the concept of memory. After dialoguing with
these theoretical concepts in relation to Rushdie’s narrative, we conclude that
the story teller, Rashid Khalifa, besides being the guardian of the memories of
his community, is the spokesman of a discourse which imposes itself as
resistance to crystallized and oppressing values from the part of some groups
within the community.
