Technical Potency on the Use of Nypa Midrib and Its Mixture with Coconut Coir for the Manufacture of Medium-Density Fiberboard

Indonesia's tropical natural forest woods are conventionally still raw materialsfor MDF, which in potenry becomes depleted scarce.Consequently, use of alternativefibrous materials deserves thorough consideration, with theirpotencies abundant and most!J still unutilized, such as Nypa frutican midrib and coconut coir. In relevant, an experiment iuas conducted to utilizeboth kinds offiber for MD F Thosefiber stuffs were each passed through the preparation, and examination of their basicproperties (i.e.specific graviry, chemicalcomposition, andfiber dimensions and their derivedvalues).Thefibrouspulping/or MD F employed a hot semi-chemicalsodaprocess under atmosphericpressure,followeduiib the refining action to achievepulpfreenessat 600-700 ml CSF The refined pulp were then added 1vith additives (i.e. 4% alum, 3% UF-adhesive, 5% activated charcoal}, and then shaped into MD F mat using wetprocess,followed with heat treatment, hot pressing, conditioning, and ultimately the testingof MD Fproperties. Scrutiny on MD Fpf?ysico-strength properties revealed that nypa-midribfibers were moreprospectivefor MD F than coconut-coirfibers.Activated-charcoaladdition lowered the MDF'formaldebyde-emission, but decreasedits strengths. In properties, MD Fsfrom nypafibers significant!J outperformed thosefrom coconut-coirfibers in complying with the standard (15).Yet, coconut-coirjh:•rs could still beprospectivefor MDF by mixing them (pulpform) with nypa-ftberpulp at the proportion (w/2v): 25%+75'% and50%+ 50%.

Effects of Bamboo Species, Pressing Time and Pre-treatment of Bamboo Strips on the Properties of Laminated Bamboo Board

The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of bamboo species, pressing time and pre-treatment of bamboo strips on the properties of laminated bamboo board (LBB). Bamboo strips for LBB fabrication were prepared from mature cu/ms (± 4 years old) of a11do11g bamboo (Gigantochloa pseudoarundinacea) and mqyan bamboo (Gigantochloa rob us ta) collectedfrom private gardens in If/est Java. The strips.fro111each bamboo species tuere assigned into 3 groups by pre-treatment methods: toureated,cold soaking in 7% boron solution for 2 boars, and bleached with 15% by drogenperoxide solution.The LBB was manufacred using ureaformaydeble (UF)added with wheal'flour eqtta! to 10% o/ U F The cold pressing time applieduere 4 bosrs and 5 hours.The resultssboued that the average density, moisture content and thickness SI/le/ling ef laminated bamboo boards n/ere 0.76 g/ Cf!/, 9.70% and 3.97% respectivefy. No delananationoccurred in all .rcwples lfsi11g UF gllfe, 1vhich indicating high bonding q11alz!J. The average bonding strength (dry test) of laminated bamhoo board madefro111andong1vas hip,her (74.8 kg/ m/) than that cf mqpn bamboo (67.9 kg/ cm') Preservation and hleachi11g treatmen! o/ bamboo strips reduced the strength o/ LBB.Several properties of I ~BB mere not si,f!,nificantfy affected by;• bamboo species except the compressionstrength. Ingeneral tbree-lqyerthick laminated bamboo board either madefro111 andong or 111qya11 hamboo had strength val11e.r comparableto u/ood strength dew I,whereas tbose strips bleached with 15% hydrogenperoxide solntion had strength values similar to wood strenc~th class 11.Laminated bamboo board is suitablefor solid uood ssbstitate and peiforms as altemative matenalfor:f11mit11re, interior design and buliding materials.

Durabiliry of bamboo is common!J assessed using wood laboratory testing procedure, such as agar plate method.an alternative soil bed test using unsterile soil is one attractive durabiliry test method as it is cheap and simple to set up. Thispaper studies bamboo strips durabiliry againstfungus using soil bed test method.Bamboo strip tested were taken radially from inner (i),middle (my) and outer(o)and also longitudinally from bottom (By), parts of Dendrocalamus asper cu/ms.The results show inner part strip (i) is moresusceptible tofungi than the middle (my) and outerpart (o). Almost all bamboo strips taken from innerpart (i)failed topin and hand bending test after six months exposure. S amp/es exposed in soil bed with 100% water holding capaciry decayed more severely than the 80% water holding capaciry.The bamboo stripsfrom bottom (BJ part were less susceptible than middle (MJand top (TJof bamboo height, boueuer, the differenceiuas not significant. The Resistance of Six Wood Species Against Decaying Fungi

Si wood species name!J huru kacang wood (Neolitsea triplinervia Merr.),beleketebe (Sloanea sigun Szysz), tunggereuk(Castanopsis tunggurrut A.DC),ki endog (Acer niveum BL), huru mentek (Linclera polyantha Boerl.) and neem (Azadirachta indica(uss.),were evaluated its resistanceproperry against ninefungalattack usingKolleflash methods. Samp/esef every wood species were dividedradialy into two groups, name is outer and inner parts of log. Results indicated that A. inclica belongs to resistant wood (class II), C. tunggurrut and L. polyantha were moderate!J resistant (classIII), 1vhile, N. triplinervia, S. sigun and A. niveum iuere not resistant (class IV). Comparing of those two samples groups,the weight loss of the innerpart was lou/er i.e. 8. 26%,classified as moderate!Jresistant (class III)than that ef the outerpart logsi.e.12.4%, classifiedas not-resistant wood (class IV) to thefungal attack. The highest weight loss iuas occurredon the outerpart log of N. triplinerviaexposedto Pycnoporus sanguineus HHBI-324 (54.8%).
