ABSTRACT Wood acidity signifies an important factor that inflicts impact on metal corrosion and gives effect on adhesive bonding quality. Wood acidity varies not only between species, but also at different parts in the same tree. This paper studies the wood pH and buffering capacity at various positions in the same tree of two potential species from Riau. Those wood species are locally known as tampui beras (Baccaurea macrocarpa (Miq.) Muell. Arg.) and manggis hutan (Garcinia cornea Miq.). The pH was determined using pH meter on the liquid of hot-water-extracted sawdust of the corresponding wood, while buffering capacity was measured by acid and base titration. The result shows that in average, acidity of tampui beras wood (5.2) is stronger than that of manggis hutan (6.3). Both wood species are classified as acid wood with pH less than 7. With respect to the tree height, sample taken from bottom part has the lowest pH value, while based on lateral position at the stem, progressing from the bark in depth to the pith the sapwood is higher in pH value than the heartwood and transition area. In every wood sample tested, acid buffer capacity is higher than base capacity.

Attempts are necessary to enhance the added value of illipe nuts. Among them is throughtheprocessingof thefruit intofat.One manner to extractthefatportionfromthe illipe• nutfruits is using organicsolvent. In relevant, researchn/as conducted on the extraction of illipe-nutfatfrom itsfruit of 4 species Shorea spp 1vhich tuas originatedfrom the experiment station in Bogor, WestJava. Fatextraction111as conducted using hexane as the solvent.The resultingfatuas then examinedfor itpfysical-chemicalproperties and sustained the GC• MS (Gas Chromathograpf?y-MassSpectrometry)analysis. The resultrevealed that the illipe-nutfatfrom4 tree species varied in fatyield and its pbysical-cbemical properties (i.e. moisture content, acid number,freefaticacid and iod number). The GC-MS ana!Jsisindicated that illipe-nutfat contained various saturatedfatryacid as 1vell as unsaturated and other chemical compounds, such as phenol, aldehyde, bydrocarbon(aliphaticand ryclic) and hexane (presumab!Jfromthe organicsolvent). Oleic acid is dominant chemical component of S.stenoptera and S. parvifolia, metf?yl oleate in S. pinanga and metf?ylene-(4-trimetf?ylsilanyl-pheny~-aminein S. mecisopteryx.

Agaruood signifies as one of the non-timber forestproducts (NTFPs) comodities in Indonesia.The-form of aganvood varies, such as lumps, chips,flour, until oil Aganvood in incense shape will give eff smells, if burnt. This experiment aimed to identify chemical components in four grades of agaruood from the best to the loses: i.e. kacangan B, teri B, kamedangan A dan kamedangan B.Identification was petformed by extracting the agaruood with acetone solvent, and then the acetone extract n/as fractionated using gradient column chromatography method 1JJith n• hexane-ethyl acetate as elueru. Identijication of compoundsproceeded11singgaschromatography-massspectrophotometer. "Res11lts of identijication revealed that there nere sesquiterpene compounds in the four grades of aganvood (i.e. kacangan B, teri B, kamedanganA and kamedangan BJ, but kinds of compounds tuere differentfromonegradeto other. Chromone compoundson!J existed in 2 grades of aganvood covering kacangan B ubicb had 2 compounds (6-hidro:>ry-2- methyl-5-nitrochromone), and 3-meto:>rymethyl-2,5,5,8a tetrameth.Jrl-6, 7,8,8a-tetrahydro-5H-chromone), and kamedanganA with on!J one compound (2,2-dimetl!]l-67, -dimeto:>rychromone). Thepresenceof sesquiterpene and chromone 1JJithpartiadarportion and cbaraaensticin each of thosefour aganvood grades indicative!} bears theirroleexplainingtheirgradefs romthe bestuntilthe lowest.
